Bommanna Loganathan Assistant Professor of Environmental/Analytical Chemistry, Department of Chemistry and Center for Reservoir Research
Dr. Loganathan’s research interests include monitoring of toxic environmental pollutants in the regional waters (KY Lake Watershed) and their effect on wildlife and human health. Currently, organochlorine (polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), chlorinated pesticides (DDTs, HCB, chlordane compounds etc.) and organometallic compounds (butyltins) are being measured in water, sediment, freshwater mussels and fish tissues from Kentucky Lake watershed. The data generated will be used to make clear the pollutants’ distribution, behavior and environmental transformations. In vitro laboratory studies are also being conducted to elucidate human immunotoxic potential of these pollutants using human natural killer lymphocytes. Students who work in his laboratory are trained in trace level (parts per billion/parts per trillion) analysis of synthetic organic and organometallic pollutants in environmental (air, water, soil and sediment) and biological (fish, shellfish and human tissues) samples using state-of-the-art instrumentation and computers. Brief description of the work proposed in the CRUI Grant Dynamics of organic and organometallic pollutants in Ledbetter Embayment: This subproject will look at the effects that water level fluctuations have upon the organic chemical pollutants’ distribution, environmental degradation/modifications, bioaccumulation and biomagnifications in Ledbetter Embayment. Human-induced water level changes in the Ledbetter embayment result in alteration of environmental parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen etc.; these changes affect the stability of some of the organic contaminants. For example, DDT is converted to DDE and DDD in oxygenated and anoxic conditions respectively. Consequently, exposure of these pollutants to organisms in the Ledbetter embayment varies qualitatively as well as quantitatively during different seasons (summer and winter pools). Environmental (water, soil and sediment) and biological samples (benthic organisms, fish, shellfish, birds and mammals) will be collected during different seasons and the organic pollutant levels will be measured in addition to other conventional parameters (DO, pH etc.). The data generated will be used to describe the effect of water level fluctuations on the pollutants’ behavior and fate in the Ledbetter embayment.
