| Of the three sample species, the
squirrel is the only one with 5 toes. Its digits are highly
mobile and enable it to climb, grasp, and dig. Squirrels are also
known to carry objects and stand on only two feet. Their
plantigrade stance and phalangeal formula enable them to do this. |
