FAQ
1. What is NCAA Division I Re-certification?
Recertification is a process through which a two year review of the current policies, procedures, and expectations of the Athletic Department is conducted by the University, Athletic Department, Students, Faculty, Staff, and community members. This is a transparent accounting of all actions that will assure that MSU and the Athletics Department are acting in the best interest of our students, student-athletes, fans, and community support structure.
2. Why is MSU doing a re-certification?
Murray State University is required by NCAA Division I requirements to undergo a re-certification every ten years. Our time is now.
3. When will MSU start the re-certification process, and how long will it last?
Members of the Murray State faculty, staff and student body, along with community members have been collecting data about our athletics programs and discussing this process since May of 2007. The process will continue through April 2009.
4. What are the possible outcomes of the re-certification?
The three options of certification status are: (a) certified; (b) certified with conditions; and (c) not certified. While universities/colleges will have an opportunity to correct deficient areas, those universities/colleges that do not take corrective actions may be ruled ineligible for NCAA championships.
5. What are the areas examined by the re-certification?
There are three general areas examined: Academic Integrity, Equity & Student Well Being, and Governance & Rules Compliance. Within each area to be studied by the committee, the NCAA has standards, called operating principles, which were adopted by the NCAA to place a “measuring stick” by which all Division I members are evaluated.
6. Will there be any outside review of the process?
Yes. After the group of Murray State faculty, staff, students, and community members have submitted their report to the NCAA a Peer Review Team made up of individuals from around the country visit MSU, evaluate the report, and make suggestions to the NCAA. The NCAA’s certification decision on MSU’s status will be based upon this Peer Review Team’s assessment.
