ABOUT US - The Gamma Beta Phi Society

The Gamma Beta Phi Society was chartered on March 22, 1964, in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Created by a group of Southern college educators, it grew out of the high school Beta Club, and Dr. John H. Harris, founder of that organization, served as the Society’ s Executive Secretary for its first decade.

Under the tutelage of the next Executive Secretary, Dr. Aaron Todd, the Society was revitalized, new chapters steadily added, and the headquarters moved to Murfreesboro, Tennessee. In 1984, Dr. Todd resigned as Executive Secretary, and the National Executive Committee conducted a national search, and hired a dedicated former member and National Executive Committee Member, Mrs. Margaret McCauley, to fill the post. The position title was changed to National Executive Director, and Mrs. McCauley has held that position since. Mr. W.R. “Russ” McCauley was elected by The Societys’ National Senate as National Executive-Treasurer, a position he served as for the next four years. At that time the National Headquarters was established and located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. In 1994, as the Society continued to grow, a National Business Manager position was added; Mr. Jimmy McNutt was selected by the National Executive Committee for this position. In 2002, Mr. McNutt was elevated to Assistant National Executive Director, and serves in that position today.

Today Gamma Beta Phi has chapters all across the United States. It regularly inducts thousands of academically excellent students who share its mission of promoting education and providing community service to their colleges and communities. The Society has made a major impact all across America. In recent years, The Gamma Beta Phi Society has collected thousands of books for St. Jude Children’s Hospital, six thousand pairs of shoes for citizens of Iraq, collected thousands of hats for the Heavenly Hats Foundation, thousands of letters to the service men and woman onboard the USS Kitty Hawk, and bought an Ark for Heifer International. The Society’s list of accomplishments is long and impressive; we would love to have you help us in our endeavors.

Currently, there are approximately 40,000 active student members of Gamma Beta Phi, and their numbers and commitment to the Society’s ideals continue to grow.
