Red-eared Slider

 

 
5"-11.5", easily identified by a prominent yellow, orange, or red blotch behind the eyes.  Carapace is oval, olive to brown, with varied patterning.  This is a subspecies of the Pond Slider, which is found throughout the midwestern and southeastern U.S.  Lives in slow moving rivers, streams, swamps, ponds, and lakes with soft bottoms and lots of vegetation.  Very fond of basking, often stacked upon one another.  Young are carnivorous but herbivorous as they mature.  Often sold as pets.
