Exam 3, covering sections 2.3 and 2.4 (but understanding of 2.2 is very useful for it, too), is scheduled for Tuesday at 1:30 in our usual classroom. I expect to have the exam graded Tuesday evening and will report your overall grade on Canvas Tuesday night so you can decide whether to take the final exam. A possible time for the final exam is 1:30 on Thursday, but we'll have to make arrangements if some students are taking the algebra final.

To help you with preparation we'll meet in our usual classroom on Monday 3:30pm, after the modern algebra exam.

Office hours schedule for next week:
Monday 9:30-1:30
Tuesday 9:30-1:30
Wednesday Zoom only 10:00-3:00 (email me to get the session started)
Thursday 9:30-1:30

Exam 2 turned out decently - see the scores and docs page for the statistics.

Next week, I am hoping to cover sections 2.3-2.5, but we'll see how far we manage to get.

We discussed in class having exam 3 possibly on Friday, so be thinking about whether this is still a good idea.

Hope you are having a good Thanksgiving break!

We'll meet for a special session on Monday as make-up for election day. After considering some homework in 2.2, we move on to 2.3.

By popular demand, exam 2 has moved to Tuesday.

Home, 11/15

On Tuesday, we continue working on homework in section 1.4, Problem Farm. We'll also look at some problems in 2.1.

We decided we'd have exam 2 on the Monday before Thanksgiving.

Home, 11/8

On Tuesday, we conclude lectures on 1.4 and start working on homework in section 1.4 from the book. Problem Farm 1.4 will follow.

We are thinking of having exam 2 during week after next.

Home, 11/1

On Thursday, we continue lectures on 1.4. (Recall there is no school on Tuesday: go vote if you haven't already!) Will probably get to homework the following week.

Note that the first assignment for section 1.4 is in the book. Problem farm 1.4 will be done with homework for section 2.1.

Home, 10/25

On Tuesday, we start lectures on section 1.4, shifting to the Royden-Fitzpatrick book.

Home, 10/18

On Tuesday, we will finish lectures on section 1.3 and start doing some homework, so try to do some problems in problem farm 1.3.

Home, 10/11

On Tuesday, we will start lectures on section 1.3. Homework for section 1.2 will be due with the one for section 1.3.

Have a nice fall break!

Home, 10/4

Exam 1 turned out pretty well, in spite of reduced expectations by the students. Everyone could use writing a few more details on the solutions, especially how elementary knowledge of previous courses is applied.

On Tuesday, we will discuss homework in section 1.2. Maybe you can bring me the write-ups before fall break?

Exam 1 is planned for Thursday. On Tuesday, we will start section 1.2 and do some review before the exam. Check out the sample exams on the "scores and docs" page.

During homework discussion yesterday and today, we found that Problem Farm 1.1 needs some modifications. The updated Problem Farm document (one A problem was added and one B problem was deleted, because it was false) is now available.

Home, 9/20

On Tuesday, we will finish section 1.1 and possibly get into 1.2.

Exam 1 will be over sections 8.1-8.4 and 1.1. Maybe week after next?

Home, 9/6

On Tuesday, we will finish section 8.3 and discuss homework from it. Then we will continue with lectures on 8.4.

Home, 8/30

On Tuesday, we will discuss homework from section 8.2. Then we will continue with lectures on 8.3.

Homework for sections 8.1 and 8.2 is due on Thursday.

Home, 8/23

Homework has been posted. On Tuesday, we will discuss homework in section 8.1.

Welcome to the course! Things will be run pretty much like last semester: same students, same professor, same orchestra (The Franco-German Tagged Partition Band). The website is louder, though.

It's gonna be great!
