The semester is over and the final grades are in! Exam 3 turned out well and no one needed to take the final exam.
It was a great pleasure teaching this class, as you were a dedicated and engaged group of students! Thank you for willingly going to the board for homework problems and diligently writing up extra homework problems, even if it did give me more to read. Sorry we were a little rushed in the end.
Have a great winter break, and I'll see some of you in the spring!

Exam 1 turned out well. Good job, class! Keep in mind that, due to homework being a large part (36%) of your grade and everyone getting good grades on the homework, one can get dissapointing scores on the exams, while still having an overall decent grade.
On Tuesday, we will finish lectures on section 3.2 and start working on homework from sections 3.1 and 3.2.

On Tuesday, we will continue with lectures on sections 3.1 and 3.2.

Exam 1, covering sections 1.2, 1.3, and 2.1-2.4 is scheduled for Thursday of next week. Check out a sample exam on the "scores and docs" page. You can find further practice exams on the Motherlode (new!). The theory questions will come from the list covered in the "Test Knowledge" document, also on the "scores and docs" page. The format of the exam will stay the same as on the sample exam: three theory questions and your choice of five problems from the ones offered. Best five will be taken into account if you do more than five.
On Tuesday, we will continue with lectures on section 3.1 (not on exam) and leave some time for review before the exam.
Have a nice fall break!

On Tuesday, we will finish discussion of homework in section 2.4 and start on chapter 3.
Homework for section 2.4 will be due on Wednesday so that you can get it back after fall break on Tuesday, ahead of exam 1 on Thursday.
Home, 9/22
On Tuesday, we will finish discussion of homework in section 2.3 and start on 2.4.
After finishing 2.4, we are planning for an exam. Perhaps it would be best if it were before fall break, but it appears class sentiment was predominantly to have it after fall break on Thursday. Keep thinking about what day would suit you and we will discuss it in class.

Welcome to the course! Look around to familiarize yourself with the layout of these webpages. To get to other pages, click on the links in the menu (or drop-down, if viewing on a smartphone). The most often-used pages are in the first line of the menu (or the first several choices of the drop-down). "Scores and docs," for example, has all the documents for the course.
Your first exercise is to find the syllabus on these pages and read it. The items there that are typically of greatest interest to students are from "Homework" to "Make-ups."
These pages will get more content as information becomes available. Check back often: useful information is provided in the "home" section (which you are reading), typically updated weekly. For now, here is some information on Canvas and lecture notes.
Canvas: Canvas will mainly be the repository of class notes and your grades. Information about the course and weekly messages will be posted to this website (also accessible from Canvas). (Why bother with the website outside of Canvas? Two reasons: it's easier to make updates to it, and it stays public. I value this, and you may grow to as well, as a service to future students of this same course.)
Lecture notes: Have these with you so that you can follow the lectures in class without having to copy a lot. Because there aren't many students in this class, I will print them for everyone. Blank ones are on the "scores and docs" page if you need an additional copy, or you want to write on a tablet. Notes written in class are on Canvas.
Homework submission: will be via paper, a change if you have recently taken a course with me.
