PRESENTS A SERIES OF ON-LINE SHORT COURSES
SUMMER—FALL 2004

INTRODUCTION

A series of short courses are available at nominal tuition. These short courses were designed by Murray State University’s Program of Distinction in “Telecommunications Systems Management. Each course will require an average student to spend 20 hours of time going through the course materials. Two Continuing Education Units from Murray State University are available for completing each course. Please tell the person taking your registration that you would like these credits.

DURATION OF OFFERING

Each short course will be available 24 hours per day 7 days per week during the dates specified above. It will take approximately 20 hours of actual online contact to complete. The courses are intended to be stand- alone and should not require the involvement of an instructor. However instructors are available and may be e-mailed should you have questions. They will check their email regularly and respond to your inquiry within 24 hours.

REGISTRATION PROCEDURE

Registration can be made by calling at 1 888 537 5450 anytime 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. M-F Central time. You may use a Master or Visa Card for making payment. You will be enrolled in the class 24 hours after you register. Access information will be emailed to you.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

First Experience in Telecom

Telecommunications is an evolving field that is in need of definition and explanation. The first course in the series is suitable for a variety of clientele who want an introduction to the discipline.

1. TSM 001 Introduction to Telecommunications - Terry Holmes, Assistant Professor of Marketing, Murray State University.

Explore the vast telecom landscape including standards, protocols and various transport technologies. You will be exposed to key technologies, including data and voice networking as well as different wireless internet standards. You will find out how markets drive the technology. Various telecom acronyms will be explained, not only how they work, but how they result in a more efficient operation. Available August 15.

Computer Network and Design

Everyone does not need to possess the skills for installing computer networks but those working in government, industry or education may need to have a feel for how networks function whether they are in management, sales or some other related part of the enterprise. These three short courses are designed to provide the background needed to make decisions or be conversant about the integration of networking into the enterprise.


2. TSM 011 Introduction to Network TopologiesNurhendra Suwarsono, On Line Specialist, Telecommunications Systems Management, Murray State University

This course provides an overview of terms used in the networking field. It will look at common network devices and network topologies, allowing participants to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each in order to design and set up a local network solution. This course will provide an excellent background for those considering certification options or those wanting a better understanding of network technologies for management purposes. Available Now.

3. TSM 012 Introduction to Network ServicesNurhendra Suwarsono, On Line Specialist, Telecommunications Systems Management, Murray State University.

This course provides an overview of networking services used with medium to large networks as well as the Internet. It will look at inter-network devices and network services, allowing participants to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. The participant will be able to apply the information to a larger network environment while understanding the difficulties related to multi network design and set up. This course will provide a deeper background for those wanting to enter a certification pathway or those wanting a broader understanding beyond the local area network environment . Available Now.

4. TSM 013 Industrial NetworkingJim Benson, Associate Professor of Industrial and Engineering Technology, Murray State University.

The utilization of telecommunications systems in the decision making process of manufacturing and other industrial environments will be studied. The course will present techniques showing how the integration of automated manufacturing control with information technology systems can enhance real time operations resulting in a more efficient business operation thereby increasing profitability for companies. Issues about Security and Assurance

Perhaps no other aspect of technology has arisen faster than security issues. The following three short courses will provide insight into the nature of information assurance and how to approach different solutions to various components of a business operation. Infrastructure as well as information needs to be secured from outside sources.

5. TSM 021 Fundamentals of Information SecurityMichael Ramage, Director of Networks and Special Projects, Telecommunications Systems Management, Murray State University

This course will introduce students to the fundamental issues of Information Security and Assurance. Security of information will be presented from three perspectives: confidentiality, integrity, and availability. Various access control methodologies will be investigated. Students will learn about common threats facing a typical organization, as well as issues and vulnerabilities associated with an organization’s normal use of both networks and the Internet. 6. TSM 022 Securing The EnterpriseMichael Ramage, Director of Networks and Special Projects, Telecommunications Systems Management, Murray State University

This course will examine the necessary items needed to secure the enterprise and its perimeter. Topics discussed are the essential elements of firewalls, intrusion detection systems, cryptography, and anti-virus protection, as well as the design, implementation, and management issues of each. Utilizing Wireless Technology

The capability of mobile technology is rapidly giving companies an opportunity to improve communications and reach new markets. The background presented in these short courses will provide the manager and implementer with needed knowledge to pursue this fast moving industry.

7. TSM 031 Cellular Network DesignAbdul Yarali, Associate Professor of Telecommunications Systems Management, Murray State University

The cellular industry began developing second generation (2G) systems in the early 1980’s. The industry development will be traced showing how mobile communications has moved from simple voice to rich media, where the user utilizes more of their senses to gain useful information. Mobile system design and optimization is a key in meeting the needs of cellular system expansion. Information presented will allow engineers and managers of mobile communications to evaluate applications of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), Global System for Mobile (GSM) and Time Multiple Access (TMA). The course will reveal the role mobile technology will play in the consumer market place automating manual tasks resulting in data error reduction and cost savings, time saving and information retrieval. 8. TSM 032 Current Wireless ApplicationsMichael Hegeman, Vice President of Wireless, EDS Corporation, Plano Texas.

A look at the way mobile technology is being incorporated into corporate strategies. Several models will be described along with the application software that the model requires. Several real world problem situations will be described and the rational of the solutions chosen will be presented. This course will give students innovative ideas about incorporating mobile technology into a business operation. Availability: TBA

9. TSM 033 Integrating GIS into a Corporate StrategyMichael Busby, Mid America Remote Sensing Center, Murray State University

This course provides an introduction to geographic information systems. As these tools become integrated into corporate telecommunications and information systems, managers in all fields must learn to apply them effectively in business decision-making. In this course, students will develop these skills by learning the basic operations of GIS software and by examining several business geographic projects using this software and a variety of data sources. Techniques for using virtual navigation devises and remote databases for graphical representations will be investigated. Using these advanced technologies in crisis management will integrate Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Emergency Rescue. Available Now.

10. TSM 071 Using Web Research Skills - Linda G. Miller, Director, Center for Teaching and Learning Technology, Murray State University

The web has become a vast source of information and is a resource for all types of research. More and more posting go on line each day. Have you ever gotten bogged down in your searches? We all need to improve our efficiency in finding relevant information, even corporate executives. This short course is training that we all need. Everyone from high school students to adults can benefit. In this short course you will learn techniques and tools that will enable you to untangle the web making you more efficient. You will learn to select the best work engine for a task, how to use it and identify strategies and resources to help you get the information that you need. Available Now.

11. TSM 072 Improving Presentations Using Flash - Cassidy Palmer, Academic Training Coordinator, Murray State University

If you are a novice at building your presentations, using such programs as Power Point does not provide you with all the dressing that you would like to produce a catchy presentation. If you would like to improve all types of presentations and produce some really professional materials then this short course is for you. The course will begin with a novice level introduction to the tools and features of Macromedia’s Flash MX. Building on this basis knowledge, students will then learn to create powerful multimedia presentations focused on utilizing presentation software. You also will learn about feasible delivery methods for this media including web and compact disk. Available Now.
