TITLE:
Telecommunications Solutions Development

CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
A capstone course for the M.S. in TSM that requires students to use project management techniques involving the technical, financial and managerial aspects of developing an integrated communications network solution meeting voice, data and video requirements. Major emphasis in the proposed solution is on requirements analysis, solution design, solution implementation and solution management. Oral communication skills are required for presentation of proposed solution.
- PURPOSE:
To provide the student with an understanding of network design, operations and management from both a technical and managerial perspective.
- COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The primary objective is to provide the student with a basic understanding of the requirements necessary to capture a telecommunications project through the competitive bid process. This objective will demonstrate the students' ability to specify, design, install, operate, manage and implement a network solution.
CONTENT
OUTLINE:
The course will be an applied project course. The project will require participation in a team developing a network design proposal. The teams will be assigned and given a set of requirements for the network. The team will use the semester to develop a proposal including a management volume, a technical volume and a cost volume. The teams will have their initial (Pink Team) review prior to mid-term and then a final (Red Team) review about two weeks before end of the semester. The teams will be given a list of Concerns and Deficiencies (C&Ds) after each review. The teams must address the C&Ds in the next version of the proposal. The teams will submit their completed proposal as the final.

Microcomputer lab with network and Internet access, MSU mainframe accounts and specialty software as needed and appropriate for projects.

Students are expected to attend and participate in all class meetings as required.
ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY:
In adherence with college policy academic dishonesty (cheating on exams,
plagiarism, etc.) will not be tolerated and students so engaged will be
subject to one or more of the following disciplinary actions:
(1) a zero on exams or assignments
with no make-up,
(2) lowering of the final letter
grade by one or more grades;
(3) a grade of “E” for the course,
(4) charges filed with the Vice-President
of Student Affairs.
