Grading
Procedures and Policies
- From audits to
I's, X's, and W's, sometimes assigning grades can be like reading
a foreign language. This seminar will address the university's grading
policies and procedures.
-
Delivering
Effective Lectures - Tools such as
SmartBoards and PowerPoint are being widely used (and often misused)
to aid in the delivery of classroom lectures. This workshop will
focus on the effective use of tools such as these. The in's and
out's of proven PowerPoint and SmartBoard techniques will be demonstrated.
-
Student
Privacy - Uncomfortable with what you can and cannot discuss
with students and/or their parents? This is the workshop for you.
Come and make sure that you're on the right side of the law when
it comes to working with student grades and records.
-
Developing
A "Presence" in the Classroom - The first few
semesters in the classroom can be a little intimidating. It's not
uncommon to look around the room and identify more with your students
as peers rather than as their instructor. This seminar will focus
on the unique instructor/student relationship; how it is developed,
fostered, and maintained.
-
Class
Discipline - Students will be students but sometimes they
can push an instructor a little too far. What disciplinary resources
are available? What can you do if you are threatened by a student?
What if you catch someone cheating? Come and learn the answers to
each of these questions and many more that you may have about the
issue of class discipline.
-
Dealing
with Classroom Diversity - Murray State prides itself on
the international diversity of its students and faculty. What cultural
issues are introduced into the class due to this diversity? A great
deal of discussion and research has taken place regarding this issue.
This seminar will focus on how to deal with cultural differences
in the classroom.

Blackboard
and E-Study: Adding an Online Component to Your Courses
- Since adopting the Blackboard Course Management system, Murray
State has seen an enormous increase in the number of instructors
that are incorporating online components into their courses. Technically,
this workshop will focus on the basics of Blackboard. Pedagogically,
it will address the many issues facing the effective use of threaded
discussions, the pros and cons of online groups, and online assignment
design.
-
Active
Learning Techniques - Overwhelmingly, research is showing
that students desire to be actively engaged with what they are learning.
This workshop will serve as inspiration and guidance into the addition
of active learning components into classroom activities.
