Q. When someone calls extension 1234, it rings on my phone. Why, and how can I make it stop?
A. Extension 1234 has been forwarded to your phone accidentally. Call Telephone Repair at 4400 and describe the problem to them. The Telephone Repair office will cancel the call forward of extension 1234 so that it will no longer ring at your phone.
Q. When I dial extension 1234, it rings to the wrong person's phone. Why, and how can I reach the person that I am trying to call?
A. Extension 1234 has been forwarded to someone else accidentally. Call Telephone Repair at 4400 and describe the problem to them. The Telephone Repair office will cancel the call forward of extension 1234 so that it will no longer ring at the wrong phone.
Q. When I dial 1-9-area code-phone number, I get a recording that says, "Your call cannot be completed as dialed. Please check the number and try again." Is there something wrong with my phone or the outgoing lines?
A. The recording is coming from our long distance carrier. There is nothing wrong with your telephone or MSU's phone lines. Try dialing the number later, and if the same recording is received, call Telephone Repair at 4400 and they will notify the telephone company.
Q. My phone will ring and when I answer, I here a beep every few seconds. What is this?
A. Someone is trying to send a fax and is mistakenly dialing your extension. If the fax is coming from on-campus and you have a D-Term phone with display, look at the display to see what extension the fax is being sent from. You can then call the Telephone Repair office at 4400 to find out where the fax machine is located. You can and try to transfer the incoming fax call to you office fax machine. Once you have received the fax, call the sender and inform them of the mistake.
Q. Where can I get a Murray State University Campus Telephone Directory?
A. Faculty and Staff may pick up a Murray State University Telephone Directory at the Campus Operator's office located on the first floor of the General Services Building. Students living on-campus will receive MSU Telephone Directories through the Housing Department. Students living off-campus may purchase a Campus Telephone Directory from the MSU Bookstore.
Q. Where can I get a Bell South telephone directory?
A. Bell South telephone books are available to be picked up at the Telecommunications Office located on the first floor of the General Services Building.
Q. How do I forward my phone to a different extension?
A Only faculty, staff, hall directors, and resident advisors are allowed to use the call forwarding features. To receive instructions about call forwarding, call the Telephone Repair office at 4400.
Q. How do I cancel call-forwarding that has been set on my phone?
A. Call the Telephone Repair office at 4400 and request instructions.
Q. How do I request voice mail?
A. Only Murray State University faculty and staff are able to access the voice mail system. Students cannot. To request voice mail you may fill out the online Voice Mail Request Form or call the Telephone Repair office to request a Voice Mail Request Form be faxed to you. Once you receive the form, fill it out completely and fax it back to Telecommunications at 2101. Once a voice mailbox has been activated for your extension, you will receive instructions via fax leading you through the setup process.
Q. My voice mail is not answering my calls or is not working right. Why?
A. Please call the Telephone Repair office at 4400 and ask if a voice mail account has been activated for your extension. You must request voice mail before it will be activated for your extension. If you have filled out the Voice Mail Request Form, someone will notify you when your account is activated. You will receive setup instructions. Follow these instructions completely. If you have completed all of the steps and your voice mail still does not work, call the Telephone Repair office at 4400 to report the problem.
Q. I am trying to change my Voice Mail Personal Greeting, but when I dial 3550 and enter my security code I do not get an option for Personal Greeting. How can I change it?
A. Follow step 4 of the Voice Mail Instructions completely.
Q. When I dial extension 1234, the message "I=m sorry extension 1234 is unavailable. Thank you for calling Murray State University. To report a telephone problem....." Why do I get this message?
A. The extension that you are dialing has been forwarded to voice mail but does not have an activated account. Contact the Telephone Repair office at 4400 so that they may correct the problem.
Q. How do I transfer a call to someone=s voice mail subscriber mailbox?
A. Depress the hook-flash or TRF key, dial 3550, wait for the "Invalid entry" message, dial 8, then the extension number and hang up.
Q. How can change or update my personal information for next year's MSU Telephone Book?
A. Students must change their information at the Admissions & Registrar's Office, located on the 1st floor or Sparks Hall. Faculty and staff can change their information by using the Update Request Form.
