Area Attractions

There are several places in the vicinity of Murray that are worth a visit if you haven't been to this part of the country.  Since the conference takes place on Friday and Saturday, you may consider scheduling your return later on Sunday and allow some time for exploring the area on Sunday.  Ask some of the organizers for details on any of the following ideas.

view of Kentucky lake

Kentucky Lake Dam, at the north end of the lake, is the primary generator of electricity in the region.  It is an impressive building achievement put into operation in 1944. The view of the lake from the dam is splendid!

Another one threads the needle

At Elk and Bison Prairie (but seeing one is not guaranteed)

Land between the Lakes is a large recreational area between Kentucky Lake (Tennesse river, essentially) and Lake Barkley (Cumberland river, essentially).  A drive through the area is a really pleasant, and stops at the visitor center and the Elk and Bison Prairie are recommended.  There are lots of hiking trails and other recreational opportunities.  For those flying into Nashville, Land between the Lakes is on the drive over.

A train passes over Ky. lake dam

Viewing the operation of a lock is also possible from the dam: very interesting if you have never seen something like it!

Anyone passing by Paducah on their way in or out will find it a worthwhile stop.  The downtown has been very nicely renovated and sports beautiful murals on the flood-protection walls along the river. The Quilt Museum, strongly recommended since you probably have not seen anything like it, is downtown, as are many good restaurants, most of which, unfortunately, are closed on Sunday.  If you have time for a movie, check out the Maiden Alley Cinema, one of the nicest art-movie theaters in America.

If you have never been in Nashville, and it is on your way, your best bets there are a walk among the honky-tonk bars on Broadway (downtown), a visit to the Opryland Hotel, or a visit to the replica of the Parthenon
Grand Ole Opry, the country music event, occurs most Saturdays.
