The first day of Robotics Camp 2009 in Murray, Kentucky, was a success. The campers began the day by gathering around the virtual campfire and discussing the plans for the day and for the week. The first activity was "," which challenged campers to build a structure to hold a paper flag as high in the air as possible. The record was an amazing 191 cm. Secondly, campers took that knowledge to build an arch bridge which went over a wall. This activity, called "Leap Frog," enabled students to test their basic building skills with a different outcome. Then, they applied more advanced skills in "Up, Out, and Over," a challenge to design and build a cantilever structure to suspend a tennis ball beyond a wall. The teams focused on using good building and friction-reducing techniques in a challenge called "Coast for the Most," which required campers to construct a vehicle which would travel down a ramp and roll the greatest distance. This early construction activity will be helpful when the campers build robotic vehicles later in the week.
