Robotics 2008 Camp
Day 1 -- July 7, 2008
Murray State Afternoon Group

The first day of Robotics Camp 2008 in Murray, Kentucky, was a success.  The campers began the day by gathering around the virtual campfire and discussing the plans for the day and for the week. The first activity was "Tower of Terror," which challenged campers to build a structure which would successfully hold a golf ball as high in the air as possible. The record was 40 cm.  Secondly, campers took that knowledge to build a bridge which spanned two stationary abutments spaced as far apart as possible. This activity, called "Super Structure," enabled students to test their basic building skills with a different outcome.  The record for this first-time camp activity was 87 cm. After a quick break, the teams focused on using good building and friction-reducing techniques. This challenge, "Coast for the Most," required campers to construct a vehicle which would travel down a ramp and roll the greatest distance. This early construction activity will be helpful when the campers build  robotic vehicles later in the week.
