Day 3 was the turning point of Robotics Camp 2003 in Hanson. This was our
first day of programming the RCX brick to complete challenging tasks.
"Distance Doggy" was the name of the challenge that provided
campers the chance to use the fundamentals of programming. Next, the campers
were required to add a step to their program which allowed their vehicle to back
from one box into another. Then came a multiple step program which made use of
changing the direction and the speed of the motors. The words "what"
and "until" took on new meaning. "What" was the motor
turning one direction or the other, and "until" was the length of time
until the RCX told the "what" (the motor) to stop. "Bulldozer
Bowling" challenged campers to move as many canisters as possible from one
location to another then return their robot to the starting point. Their
inventiveness was evident when they added width to the robot arms. One team was
able to move 24 containers successfully. Next, campers used the gear reduction
box with additional gears when the challenge was about going "Slow and
Steady."
Campers also began programming multi-step programs and designing their vehicles
to make turns. All campers were excited and are already planning for other
challenging events for tomorrow, including the use of remote control!
