2007 Distinguished Researcher

Dr. Bommanna Loganathan
Department of Chemistry

Bommanna Loganathan received his BS  degree in Zoology from University of Madras, India in 1977.  He received his MS and Ph.D degrees in Marine Biology from Annamalai University, India in 1979 and 1986 respectively.  In October 1986, he won Monbusho (Japanese Government) fellowship for three years and joined Ehime University, Matsuyama, Japan to conduct research on persistent environmental pollutants and their trends in the global environment.  Based on his research publications, Ehime University awarded him Ph.D. degree in Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology in March 1990.  In June 1990, he came to the United States to join as a postdoctoral research associate at Great Lakes Laboratory, State University of New York College at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY.  At Great Lakes Laboratory, he successfully completed Buffalo River Mass Balance Project, a part of the multi-million dollar ARCS (Analysis and Remediation of Contaminated Sediments) Program of the US Environmental Protection Agency and received an outstanding environmental researcher award (1992-93).  Then, he joined as a research assistant professor at Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, University System of Georgia, Savannah, GA.  At Skidaway, he played a major role in successful completion of projects funded by NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration) and the US EPA’s multi-million dollar EMAP (Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program) initiative.  In 1997, he joined Murray State University as a CRR (Center for Reservoir Research) postdoctoral associate and in the year 2000, he accepted tenure-track faculty position, a joint-appointment with Department of Chemistry and CRR.  During the last ten years, Dr. Loganathan has been actively engaged in research on environmental contamination of man-made chemical pollutants in western Kentucky in general and Kentucky Lake watershed in particular.  He has served as PI and Co-PI in a number of research projects funded by the NSF, EPA, EPSCoR and NY/NJ Harbor Discharge Group.  He has published over 60 articles in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters.  He also serves as an associate editor for the Journal of Environmental Monitoring and Restoration. Dr. Loganathan has made presentations/delivered lectures and chaired scientific sessions in meetings held in Canada, Germany, Hong Kong,  India, Italy, Korea, Japan, Singapore, Spain, Sweden and in the United States.  Dr. Loganathan enjoys working with students.  During the last five years, over twenty undergraduate students and seven graduate students were worked with him and successfully completed their research and some have published their results in peer-reviewed journals.  Dr. Loganathan’s field of research includes man-made chemical pollutants in the environment and their effects on wildlife and human health.
