First and foremost the studio records live events. Faculty, guest and student recitals, ensemble concerts, etc. are all similar in that we have one shot at getting it down on "tape" (there are no second takes).
We attend every recital that appears on the calendar with the intention of preserving the aesthetics of the live performance (making microphones as invisible as possible). However, if we are contacted ahead of time, we can tailor our approach according to the performer's interest in a higher quality recording.
We also record sessions (by special appointment) in which the concerns of live recording are thrown to the wind. Multiple takes, mastering (and, if permissible, editing) help our more involved productions compare favorably to professionally produced CDs.
