Fall 2005 Results

This has been a great semester for the Rotaract Club of Murray State University. We have dramatically increased our membership, successfully hosted our District Conference, and conducted two record-breaking fundraisers. Additionally, Rotary International has decided to feature our club in two international publications: the Rotaract eNewsletter and Rotary World.

Here are some quantified results from some of this semester's activities:

Hurricane Katrina (Red Cross)

In response to this disaster, our club was able to raise more than $1,000 (with matching donations) for the Red Cross. Never in our club's history have we collected this many donations. Selling beverages and ice cream refreshments on campus during the first couple weeks of school also helped our recruitment of new members. This was a great activity, which even made it into the Murray State newspaper: [Article] [Feature Photo]

UNICEF (United Nations Independent Children's Emergency Fund)

Our club annually participates in the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF campaign. This year, we invited other university clubs to participate, and we collected a record-breaking $550. To keep our momentum going, we also placed collection boxes in area businesses and sold gourmet popcorn on campus, bringing in $375 additional donations. Totalling more than $900, this money will be used to help children who lost their homes in Hurricane Katrina or the earthquake in Southeast Asia and in other areas of the world. [Article] [Article]

Shoe Box Project (Samaritan's Purse)

Our club also participates in Samaritan's Purse Operation Christmas Child Project every year. This year, we placed flyers in area dollar stores with directions on how to create and submit a shoe box gift through our organization. We had a very successful project, collecting more than 200 boxes for Samaritan's Purse. [Article]

Our club is very happy with our results this semester. We're going home for winter break, but we're excited about continuing our momentum in the Spring.

Gourmet Popcorn Fundraiser for UNICEF

Rotaract has recently taken on a new project to raise money for its philanthropies. Working with a Murray-based company, Rotaractors will be selling delicious gourmet popcorn.

This year, all proceeds from this fundraiser will be donated to UNICEF's relief efforts in South Asia, which has been devastated by the October earthquake. More than 75,000 have died, and more than 3 million are homeless. With winter coming in a few weeks, these donations will be used to provide winterized shelter and other necessities.

Samaritan's Purse: Operation Christmas Child

Students and community members are encouraged to fill a shoe box with small gifts for a poor child in a developing country.

Without your gifts, these children probably won't receive anything for Christmas.
