National Organization, Lifetime Membership Fee

 

Description:  Alpha Chi is a coeducational academic honor society.  Since 1922, its purpose has been to provide academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction.

 

Requirements to Join: Alpha Chi is a general honor society that admits students from all academic disciplines.  Membership is limited to the top 10 percent of an institution's juniors and seniors.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored: Some 300 chapters, located in almost every state and in Puerto Rico, induct more than 11,000 members annually.

 

 

Alpha Lambda Delta

National Organization, $35 Lifetime Membership Fee

 

Description:  Alpha Lambda Delta is a national society that honors academic excellence during a student's first year of college.  Founded at the University of Illinois in 1924, Alpha Lambda Delta has more than 240 chapters throughout the nation.  The Murray State chapter was chartered in 1967.

 

Requirements to Join:  Eligible students are those who have attempted at least 15 hours of credit in one of their freshman semesters and have earned, with those 15 or more hours, a semester grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored:  Officers initiate new members each year and organize social and service activities.  The national organization sponsors an annual undergraduate scholarship competition, awarding thirty-five $1,000 scholarships to selected applicants.

 

 

Alpha Phi Sigma

Description:  Alpha Phi Sigma is a nationally recognized honor society for students in the field of criminal justice.  The society recognizes academic excellence by undergraduate and graduate students of criminal justice as well as students in the juris doctorate field.

 

Requirements to Join:  Undergraduate majors or minors in criminal justice are eligible for membership after completing 42 semester hours overall with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and 1 hours in criminal justice with a minimum grade point average of 3.2 in criminal justice course work.  Murray State University’s Delta Phi Chapter offers an affiliate membership for undergraduate students who major or minor in criminal justice and have met the grade point requirements, but have not yet completed the required number of credit hours for full membership.  Affiliate members must have completed 30 semester hours with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and at least 3 hours in criminal justice course work with a 3.2 grade point average.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored: Alpha Phi Sigma offers leadership and group organizational experience to those students interested in doing a little more.  The local chapter contains four elected officer positions.  The national chapter officer positions are also open to nomination of active members.  There is a national conference that is held in conjunction with the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, which provides opportunities to meet with professionals in the field and the chance to make valuabel contacts.  Members are also entitled to receive the bi-annual newsletter, The Docket, which contains information on the National Organization and the criminal justice field.

 

 

Alpha Sigma Lambda

National Organization, $20 Membership Fee

 

Description:  Alpha Sigma Lambda is a national organization for students in continuing higher education.  It was founded in 1945 and has nearly 300 institutional chapters.  The Murray State chapter, Eta Delta, was founded in 1989.

 

Requirements to Join: Must have had a break in formal education; must be admitted to Murray State and have a minimum of 24 semester hours taken and graded at MSU; must have a minmum grade point average of 3.4; must have at least twelve hours in Liberal Arts & Science (University Studies).  Transfer courses may be used to fulfil this requirement.  Members will be selected from the highest ten percent of those who apply.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored:This organization is strictly an honor group.  There are not officers or meetings.  The annual induction is conducted by the advisor.

 

 

Alpha Tau Alpha

Description:  Alpha Tau Alpha is a professional honorary organization for seniors planning to become teachers of agriculture for grades 5-12 in public schools.

 

Requirements to Join:  Eligible students must hold a 3.0 grade point average, be admitted to the student teaching program, and be recommended by two faculty members.

 

 

Alpha Zeta

Description:  Alpha Zeta is an honorary agriculture fraternity that shares a fellowship for agriculture and fellow human beings.  It is a professional service fraternity.

 

Requirements to Join:  Eligible students must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average, excel in leadership, scholarship, and citizenship, and have a major or area in agriculture.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored:  Alpha Zeta sponsors the School of Agriculture Volleyball Tournament and the Alpha Zeta School of Agriculture Awards Banquet.

Description: As the premier professional business and financial information fraternity, Beta Alpha Psi recognizes academic excellence and complements members’ formal education by providing interactions among students, faculty, and professionals and fosters lifelong growth, service, and ethical conduct.

 

Requirements to Join: Undergraduates must be an ACC, ACC/IS, ACC/FIN major, have junior status, have completed one upper-level (300 or above) accounting class, have a minimun grade point average of at least a 3.0 in all upper-level accounting classes and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or 3.25 in in the last 30 hours completed, and completion of pledge requirements.  Graduate studens must be accepted into a graduate program in accounting and enrolled in at least one graduate class, completed one upper-lever accounting class, have a minimum 3.0 grade point average in all upper-level accounting classes and a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or 3.25 in in the last 30 hours completed, and completion of pledge requirements.

Beta Beta Beta (Tri-Beta)

Description:  Beta Beta Beta (TriBeta) is a society for students, particularly undergraduates, dedicated to improving the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research.

 

Requirements to Join: Eligible members must be biology majors and havea grade point average of at least 3.00.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored: Since its founding in 1922, more than 175,000 persons have been accepted into lifetime membership, and more than 430 chapters have been established throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.  Locally, TriBeta sponsors an annual high school scholarhship fair.

 

 

Beta Gamma Sigma

Requirements to Join:  Academic ranking of those being considered must be in the upper 7% of the junior class, upper 10% of the senior class, or upper 20% of the graduating master's class.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored:  Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student can receive at an AACSB accredited school.

 

 

Gamma Epsilon Tau

Description:  The Hart College Honor Society is an honor society to recognize academic achievement among members of Hart Residential College.

 

Requirements to Join:  Eligible members must be members of Hart College and a minimum grade point average of 3.2.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored:  Events sponsored are the glove, hat & scarf tree at Christmas, reding to local elementary students on Dr. Seuss Day, and co-sponsorship of the Hart Relay for Life team and Santa Project.  Also, a scholarship is given each semester.

 

 

Hester College Honor Society

The Honors Program

Description:  The Murray State University Honors Program is a university academic program designed to teach able students how to learn, how to think critically and creatively, and how to communicate effectively.  This program has been designed to provide future social and professional leaders with an appropriate breadth and depth of knowledge and a sense of cultural and social responsibility.

 

Requirements to Join:  Eligible entering students are required to have a score of 26 or better on the ACT.  Currently enrolled students must maintain a 3.2 grade point average.  Students who complete the honors sequence are eligible to graduate with the honors diploma.  The honors sequence in comprised of a designated university studies program, foreign language competency, a study abroad program, and a senior honors thesis.  Students must be enrolled in at least one honors course per semester.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored:  The Honors Program Student Council, which is comprised of elected student representatives from each class, plans social and cultural events as time will allow.  The MSU Honors Program is a member if the Kentucky Honors Roundtable, the Southern Regional Honors Conference, and the National Collegiate Honors Conference.  Our description appears in Petersen's Guide to Honors Programs and Colleges.

 

 

Lambda Alpha (Beta of KY)

National Organization

 

Description:  Lambda Alpha is the national Anthropology honor society. As an honor society, Lambda Alpha serves to recognize superiority, providing incentive for exceptional performance by granting certificates of accomplishment.


Requirements to Join:  Eligible members must be have at least a 3.0 overall grade point average, and a 3.0 or better in anthropology and archaeology courses.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored:  Lambda Alpha sponsors an annual awards banquet and presents an award at honors day.  The winning of an annually awarded national scholarship provides $5000 to a deserving graduating senior majoring in anthropology and a $1000 annual Dean's List award to a deserving junior. A Graduate Research Grant is designed to encourage overseas thesis research. The award is variable ranging from $2000 to $6000.

 

 

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars

Description:  The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is an honors organization recognizing outstanding academic achievement among first- and second-year college students. It encourages the development of leadership skills through community service, grants, scholarships, and offers many other opportunities to its members.

 

Requirements to Join:  Any student with an overall 3.4 grade point average and 12-59 credit hours is eligible to become a member.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored:  NSCS sponsors scholarships and awards, leadership development activities, service projects, community building, and information sharing.  Nationally, there are opportunities for scholarships and other recognition.  Locally, NSCS works with the Angel's Attic thrift store and offers a scholarship through Murray State University.

 

 

Omicron Delta Kappa

Description:  Omicron Delta Kappa is the national leadership honor society for college students, faculty, staff, administrators, and alumni that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership, and exemplary character. Membership in ODK is a mark of the highest distinction and honor. The purpose of Omicron Delta Kappa is threefold:  1) to recognize those who have exhibited a high standard of leadership and efficiency in collegiate activities; 2) to bring together student leaders from all sectors of collegiate life in order to help mold the sentiment of the university for questions of local and collegiate interest; and 3) to bring together members of the faculty and the student body on a basis of mutual interest and understanding.

 

Requirements to Join:  Eligible students must have at least 60 credit hours and rank in the top 10% of his or her academic college.  In addition, applicants are ranked on a points system with regard to their involvement in:  Scholarship; Athletics; Campus/ Community Service, Social/Religious Activities, and Campus Government; Journalism, Speech and the Mass Media; and Creative and Performing Arts

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored:  ODK sponsors the Student Leader of the Month and Advisor of the Month award, hosts a reception for all Leader of the Month winners, selects a Leader of the Year, and coordinated this campus honors organizations list.  Members participate in monthly meetings and are eligible to attend province and national conventions.

 

 

Phi Alpha Theta

Description: Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians.  Phi Alpha Theta seeks to bring students, teachers and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges, which promote and assist historical research and publication by members in a variety of ways.

 

Requirements to Join: Eligible members must have 12 hours of history with at least a 3.1 grade point average in history classes.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored:  Nationally, at the biennial convention, undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to meet distinguished historians and to present their own research papers.  Phi Alpha Theta presents special programs at the annual meetings of the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, the Southern Historical Association, the Western History Association, the Pacific Coast Branch of the American Historical Association, Missouri Valley Historical Conference, the Southwestern Social Sciences Association, and many state Historical associations.

 

 

Phi Eta Sigma

National Organization, Lifetime Membership

 

Description: Phi Eta Sigma is a national honor society inspired by the past and dedicated to the future whose goal is to encourage and reward academic excellence among freshmen in institutions of higher learning. Induction is an outward recognition of personal accomplishment and serves as an incentive for continued high scholarship. It provides members the opportunity to meet freshman scholars from all academic disciplines on their campuses and to join them in promoting academic excellence.

 

Requirements to Join: All freshmen who have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale at the end of any full-time curricular period are automatically eligible for membership, provided they have carried a normal academic load acceptable toward a bachelor's degree and rank in the upper 20 percent of their class.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored: The oldest and largest freshman honor society, Phi Eta Sigma was founded at the University of Illinois on March 22, 1923, and now has more than three hundred chapters throughout the United States and more than 700,000 members.  Phi Eta Sigma was voted membership into the Association of College Honor Societies in 1937. Only three societies have had longer continuous membership. Membership in Phi Eta Sigma identifies its members to employers and professional and graduate schools as persons of superior academic ability and performance.

 

 

Pi Mu Epsilon

National Organization, $20 National Membership Fee

 

Description: Pi Mu Epsilon is a nationally recognized mathematics honor society.  The purpose of PME is the promotion of scholarly activity in mathematics among the students in academic institutions.

 

Requirements to Join: Sophomores must be majoring (or intending to major) in mathematics, have completed at least three semesters of college mathematics (including two semesters of calculus), have achieved a straight A record in all math courses taken, and have an overall grade point average of at least 3.20.  Juniors and seniors must have at least two years of college mathematics including claculus, have at least a B average in math, and an overall grade point average of at least 3.06 for juniors and 3.15 for seniors.  Juniors and seniors do not have to be math majors to join.  The mathematical work of graduate students must be at least equal to that of undergraduates, and they must have maintained at least a B average in mathematics during their last school year.  Any faculty member in mathematics (or a related subject) is welcome to join.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored:  To promote mathematics, the National Pi Mu Epsilon Council sponsors an annual conference in conjunction with the Mathematics Association of America (MAA).

 

 

Pi Sigma Alpha

Description: The Zeta Phi chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society, aides in effecting the interchange of ideas regarding political science through sponsorship of speakers, forums, conferences, and other similar activities.  It is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and was chartered on the Murray State campus in 1974.

 

Requirements to Join: An undergraduate student must have completed at least ten semester hours in political science courses with at least a 3.0 overall grade point average.  A graduate student must have maintained a 3.5 overall grade point average in political science courses taken at the graduate level and an overall graduate grade point average of at least 3.5.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored:  The Zeta Phi chapter sponsors an annual program, the Waterfield Distinguished Lecture and "Talk Politics."

 

 


Psi Chi

Description:  Psi Chi is a national honor society in Psychology, founded in 1929 for the purposes of encouraging, stimulating, and maintaining excellence in scholarship, and advancing the science of psychology.

 

Requirements to Join:   Eligible students must be a Psychology major, have completed three semesters, completed nine semester hours of psychology courses, rank in the top 35% of their class in general scholarship, and have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 in both psychology classes and in cumulative grades.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored:  The Society publishes a quarterly magazine, Eye on Psi Chi, which helps to unite the members, inform them and recognize their contributions and accomplishments. The quarterly Psi Chi Journal of Undergraduate Research, fosters and rewards the scholarly efforts of undergraduate psychology students and provides a valuable learning experience by introducing them to the publishing and review process..

 

 

The Regents College Honor Society

Description: The Regents College Honor Society is designed to recognize and promote academic achievement among members of Regents College.

 

Requirements to Join:  Eligible members must be members of Regents Residential College, have at least 15 credit hours, and have and maintain at least a 3.3 overall grade point average.

 

Additional Info/Events Sponsored:  The RCHS sponsors the Regents' Christmas Angel Tree, annual Need Line food drive, the Regents Majors Fair, and an annual induction ceremony.  A book scholarship is given to a deserving member each year.

 

 

Rho Sigma Kappa

Description: The purpose of Rho Sigma Kappa is to honor and recognize those students of Occupational Safety & Health who distinguish themselves through academic achievement and exemplary character.

 

Requirements to Join:  Undergraduates must have completed at least 60 credit hours with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0.  They must have at least 15 OSH credit hours, and have maintained a 3.2 grade point average in those OSH courses.  Graduate students must have at least 9 hours of graduate credit with a 3.5 grade point average.  All applicants must have a faculty recommendation.

 

 

Sigma Gamma Epsilon

Description: Sigma Gamma Epsilon was established to recognize scholarship and professionalism in the Earth Sciences. It has for its objectives the scholastic, scientific, and professional advancement of its members and the extension of relations of friendship and assistance among colleges and universities that are devoted to the advancement of the Earth Sciences.

 

Requirements to Join:  Any person in any branch of the Earth Sciences who has completed at least 12 semester hours in Earth Science courses and has maintained a minimum 3.0 grade point average in all Earth Science courses together with an overall grade point average of 2.67 is qualified for membership.

Requirements to Join:  Eligible members must have completed PHY 235, 255, and one PHY course 300 level or above and have at least a 3.0 overall grade point average with at least a 3.0 grade point average in physics courses.

Description:  Sigma Theta Tau International, honor society of nursing, provides leadership and scholarship in practice, education, and research to enhance the health of all people.  Members are nursing scholars committed to the pursuit of excellence in clinical practice, education, research, and leadership.

 

Requirements to Join: Undergraduate students must have completed half of the nursing curriculum, have at least a grade point average of 3.0, rank in the upper 35% of their class, and meet the expectation of academic integrity.
