MSUARC's Ham Radio Licensing Assistance Program

MSUARC has an active VE program.  Bill Call, KJ4W serves as our CVE (Contact Volunteer Examiner).   He is the person to direct any questions about the exam process to.

The VEC (Volunteer-Examiner Coordinator) that we use is W5YI-VEC, http://www.w5yi.org.  MSUARC files applications for new licenses with them electronically.  Accordingly, a new ham typically gets authorized within 2-3 days of passing his/her exam.

MSUARC doesn't set a fixed exam schedule, but rather arranges exams as requested.  Generally, an exam session is scheduled about every six weeks.  We usually set the date for the next exam session at the monthly club meetings.  There are two ways a person can help get a exam scheduled:

Attend a meeting and request an exam be scheduled

Email your exam request to Bill Call, KJ4W or call him at (270) 753-7870 in advance of a meeting.

Note:  No advance appointment is required.  if an interested person sees that we have an exam scheduled at a time that suits them, they can show up without an appointment.  But if they have notified me that they plan to come, that's helpful--in case our schedule gets changed for some reason I can contact them with those details.

Exam sessions are usually conducted on either Tuesday nights or Saturday mornings.

The usual exam location for the exam is the same place that the club meets: on the MSU campus in room 237 of the I&T Building.  Click http://home.mchsi.com/~wcall/Directions_to_IT_Bldg.htm for directions.

The exam fee is the standard fee set by W5YI-VEC.  This year that is $12.  Either cash or check is accepted.  Prospective examinees also need to bring proof of ID, such as a driver's license.  A calculator is allowed, but it must be one without formulas in memory or other such storage.

We can also give Commercial FCC License exams (GROL, etc) through W5YI's companion NRE commercial system.  However, an advance appointment with Bill Call, KJ4W is required for this.

For those interested in becoming a "ham" the ARRL has a great online document called, "How to Get Started in Ham Radio".  If you're studying for your license be sure to use these online question pools for all classes of amateur radio examinations. You can even generate and take a sample exam.  If you've taken an exam and not so patiently waiting for the results the QRZ "New Hams" listings is updated daily with FCC data.
