An email to Bill, KY4NU (who arranged the conference)... The first impression of the community here was wonderful and some, even saying a very little words, likes a lot exchange one quickly QSO with US hams. I believe that's the point, despite the language differences we can provide a good level of communications, mainly for the ham basics classes that don't have access to HF international world, showing so that the radio really extends the geographic frontiers, put all in contact with different cultures.
Thanks again.
My best wishes and 73s!
Ark, PY2ZX
The Murray State University Amateur Radio Club "MSUARC" is partnering with a Brazilian radio club, a collaboration that aims to broaden the scope of ham radio in the Purchase region.
"It will allow the Amateur operators of Western Kentucky to assist a community that is thousands of miles away," according to Bill Slayman, KY4NU, a longtime member of the Murray organization who is spearheading the effort. "We will be able to provide technical advice and support for a South American sister club that is without many of the resources which we in the United States take for granted, and at the same time develop new friendships and knowledge.”
Slayman made voice contact with the radio club of São Paulo (Radioamadores do Japy), a service-oriented group using a station in the Japy mountains. The region is particularly challenged by a high inflation rate and economic disparities. The Japy organization is involved with schools and universities, and operates the Grape's Land Repeater, PY2KAN, one of the most-used Amateur connections between the São Paulo Metropolitan Area and the outlying areas.
"Even if we can supply basic materials like texts and technical manuals, and offer friendly advice over the air, we in the MSU club will be fulfilling a public service mission," according to MSU-ARC president John Dillon. "There may be other dimensions to interaction with this sister club, such as cooperation with on-air operations and mutual efforts to sustain the amateur radio hobby."
The Murray club voted in January to establish the alliance -- which has been embraced by the Brazilian organization -- and will be working to explore service opportunities. The key contact is Flávio Archangelo (PY2ZX), a graduate student in international broadcasting who is eager for involvement with North American universities. Under Archangelo’s guidance, the Japy club has undertaken charitable causes, such as assisting a youth cancer hospital, and educational efforts to enhance “world-wide ham solidarity.”
Amateur radio makes use of public airwaves set aside by international agencies for nonprofit use by hobbyists. Anyone interested in local membership should contact John Hart, KO4ZE, 270-762-6907.
