Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society
General Meeting Minutes
October 26, 2000
PRESIDENT:
President Wyatt Alverson opened the meeting
by extending a special
welcome to the new inductees.
Miss MSU nominations were taken at both the 4:30PM and 9:00PM meetings.
Each
organization on campus is eligible to nominate two of its female members.
The
4:30 nominee was GBP Treasurer Liz Fatheree. The 9:00 nominee was
GBP Member Jennifer Hibbs.
Wyatt encouraged all members to attend the Homecoming Bonfire at 8PM that
evening.
Wyatt announced names of members whose email mailboxes are full. He is
unable
to send email updates to these people and asks that all members try not to let
their email mailboxes get too full.
New members need to submit their email addresses to Doug Cecil as some of the
membership cards that were used for induction did not have a line requiring
that information.
Wyatt made it clear that GBP is not about points but about the effort behind
the points. GBP's mission is to serve through volunteer work and community
service, not about each member earning points and stopping all efforts after
earning the required number. On this note, Wyatt encouraged all members to
get involved in upcoming events such as Kent's social event, Sharaf's
education event, Liz's fundraising event, and Cheri's service event.
The next GBP meeting is scheduled for November 16th. At this meeting,
nominations for president, recording secretary, public relations and historian
will be taken. Elections will take place at the December 7th meeting.
The
only meeting on 12/7 will be the 9PM meeting.
VICE PRESIDENT:
Vice President Sharaf Alkibisi also
welcomed the new
inductees.
Sharaf spoke of the many service opportunities available to GBP members,
especially those pertaining to international students. Sharaf has created
an
online society to help international students practice their English and learn
about American culture. GBP members simply need to log on to the GBP webpage
and click on the link to the online society. Members can earn points for
chatting with international students. Sharaf stated that members need to
keep
track of the frame number when doing this and to remember to log in and out.
GBP is cooperating with the English Language Institute this semester to help
international students practice their English. Members are encouraged to
sign-up for one hour sessions where English speakers are needed to participate
in small group discussions.
There will be a panel discussion on the "Internationalization of Murray
State"
at 7PM in the Curris Center ballroom.
Sharaf also sent around a sheet for interested members to sign-up to socialize
with international students.
TREASURER:
Treasurer Liz Fatheree gave an update on GBP
Homecoming
activities. Hot dogs and hot chocolate were previously planned but will
not
be sold. Baked goods, however, were also planned, and will be sold.
As of
the 9PM meeting, GBP did not have a tent for Tent City, but would still have a
bake sale at Tent City. Members interested in helping at the bake sale or
baking goods should sign-up with Liz after the meeting.
Liz also extended thanks to those members who helped take money and sell
T-shirts at induction.
Any member interested in buying a T-shirt can get one from Lori Dial in Sparks
Hall. The T-shirts are $10 each. Car window decals are also on sale
for $1
in Lori's office.
Liz announced that dues are due NOW and can be paid in Lori's office.
RECORDING SECRETARY:
Recording Secretary Doug Cecil
welcomed new inductees.
He reminded the new members that their point requirements for this semester
are as follows:
live outside Calloway County - 5 points
live inside Calloway County - 10 points
Doug also reiterated Wyatt's remarks on volunteer service as
GBPs mission and to keep volunteering even if you have
already met your point requirements.
Point totals can be viewed via the GBP webpage. Please contact Doug
through
email if you have questions about your point totals. New members will be
placed on the roster ASAP.
CORRESPONDING SECRETARY:
Corresponding Secretary Cheri Riedel
distributed a
proposal regarding the "Mom's Day Out" service project that GBP is
planning.
This event will take place on Saturday, December 2nd in the Stables (a.k.a.
Sunset Strips) in the Curris Center from 8AM to 12PM. Much help is needed
prior to the event as well as during the event. Cheri asks that any member
wishing to help in any way to please contact her through email or by phone.
If you like a copy of the proposal, also please contact her. Cheri held a
service committee meeting directly following both meetings regarding this
event.
HISTORIAN:
Historian Alyson Holbrook welcomed all new
inductees. She asked
that anyone wanting to help her with the scrapbook to contact her. Also,
any
newsclippings or photos of GBP members are needed for the scrapbook.
Alyson
is also soliciting ideas for a scrapbook theme.
PUBLIC RELATIONS CHAIR:
Public Relations Chair Kent Bohanon is
planning a
trip to the Opry Mills mall on Saturday, November 18th. This date
was voted
on over Election Day at the 4:30 meeting. The van(s) will leave from in
front
of the Curris Center at approximately 8:30AM that morning and will probably
leave the mall at about 4:30PM, but departure time will be determined by those
in attendance. Please contact Kent if you are interested in going on the
trip.
OTHER:
GBP member-at-large Stephanie Warford made an announcement at both meetings
regarding Student Government Association. Stephanie announced upcoming
campus
events sponsored by SGA. They include Sinbad in concert on Saturday,
October
28th in the RSEC and "The Art of Kissing" lecture in the Curris Center
ballroom on Thursday, November 2nd. Stephanie also solicited complaints
from
GBP members to present to SGA. Members with complaints should call her at
762-4011.
