Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society
General Meeting Minutes
March 29, 2001
PRESIDENT: President Casey Johnson opened the meeting with a report on the
Mid-South Regional Gamma Beta Phi Meeting that he attended with
member-at-large Doug Cecil on Saturday, March 10, 2001 at Georgia Tech
University. Casey stated that Chapter V, our chapter, received the Best
Scrapbook Award. This regional award moves the Chapter V scrapbook on to
national competition to be held at the National Convention to be held in San
Antonio, Texas in September 2001. Casey stated that overall the convention
went well and was mostly attended by Georgia Tech members and other
surrounding schools.
Casey reported that he and Recording Secretary, Amanda Gerrish, would be
checking into members' GPAs to insure that all members are still eligible for
membership. This is to put the Chapter in the running for a Distinguished
Chapter Award.
Casey reminded members to please let him know if they are graduating this May
so that they may receive a seal on their diploma.
In regards to the National Convention to be held next September, Casey
announced that he would soon be putting together a National Convention
Committee to explore fundraising opportunities and other trip planning
aspects.
Casey announced that the meeting time for the Fall 2001 semester might change
because of his fall class schedule. Casey stated that he would be taking
suggestions and other feedback from members.
VICE PRESIDENT: Vice President Sharaf Alkibisi thanked all members who
participated in the International Potluck on March 10th. Sharaf stated
that
there was a good turnout overall for the event.
Sharaf announced a new mentoring program that will begin next fall for
international students. The program will entail American students
mentoring
international students who will be new to MSU and may need a little help
around campus for the first few weeks of the semester. He passed around a
sign-up sheet for all interested GBP members.
Sharaf reminded members to report any tutoring they do to Recording Secretary,
Amanda Gerrish.
CORRESPONDING SECRETARY: Corresponding Secretary Cheri Riedel announced that
GBP would be making a trip to Long Term Care at Murray-Calloway County
Hospital this coming Saturday, March 31st at 2PM. The trip is being made
to
play Bingo with the residents there. She stated that any member interested
was invited to come. Please see Cheri for directions to the Hospital if
needed.
In regards to the Bingo trips being made to Long Term Care, Cheri reminded
members to keep bringing in items to be used by the Hospital as Bingo prizes.
Cheri reminded members to keep bringing in sandwich bags full of can tabs for
the Women's Center.
In accordance with the national Gamma Beta Phi mission for the next three
years, Cheri stated that she would soon be researching Boys & Girls Clubs in
the area. Additionally, Cheri will be researching any soup kitchens in the
area. She asked that any members who knew of any nearby facilities such as
these to let her know.
Cheri announced that she would be willing to plan some more spring event such
as an Easter Egg Hunt for the Ruby Simpson Child Development Center on MSU's
campus if any members were interested in helping out. She asked that
anyone
interested to see her after the meeting.
Cheri also reminded members to make sure they turn in any points they earn
through service projects (other than organized Community Service Committee
meetings or events) to Recording Secretary, Amanda Gerrish.
RECORDING SECRETARY: Recording Secretary Amanda Gerrish reported that she was
still working on getting the point files caught up. She stated that
members
should keep emailing her their points.
TREASURER: Treasurer Elizabeth Fatheree announced that the next Rebate
Night
at Mr. Gatti's will be held on Wednesday, April 11th beginning at 5PM.
Liz also announced that there would be a car wash on April 28th at a place and
time to be announced later.
PUBLIC RELATIONS CHAIR: Public Relations Chair Kent Bohannon announced that
GBP would be sponsoring a formal dance along with some Residential College
Honor Societies on Friday, April 27th. The dance will be held at the
Murray
Women's Clubhouse on Vine Street near the Hospital and will last from 8:30PM
to 12AM. Guys are required to wear a collared shirt and tie. Tickets
will be
sold for $10 per couple and $7 per single. Tickets will be sold outside
the
Curris Center in the weeks to come. Any member of a sponsoring
organization
is invited and may bring a date that is not a member of a sponsoring
organization. Kent stated that he would be holding a Social Committee
meeting
regarding the formal on Tuesday, April 3rd in the dance lounge of the Curris
Center at 5PM. Kent announced that he was still looking for a DJ and any
member that knows of one is encouraged to let him know.
Officer nominations for Vice President, Corresponding Secretary and Treasurer
were taken for elections to be held at the April meeting. Nominations at
the

President Casey Johnson encouraged members who wish to nominate others between
the March and April meetings to simply let him know. Nominations will also
be
taken on the evening of elections.
OFFICER ELECTIONS WILL BE HELD AT THE APRIL 26TH MEETING. THIS MEETING
WILL
BE AT 9PM ONLY.
