Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society
General Meeting Minutes
January 25, 2001
PRESIDENT: President Casey Johnson opened the meeting with an announcement
from general member Stephanie Warford: the Campus Lights production of The
Wizard of Oz will be performed Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, January 25th,
26th, 27th at 8PM nightly and Sunday, January 28th at 1:30PM. Admission is
$5
for adults and $3 for senior citizens and students.
Casey asked that members consider the following suggestions made by
variousmembers:
a. the majority of points earned by members come from volunteer/serviceactivities
b. bi-monthly meetings
Casey asked that members please give him feedback on these ideas to see if
they deserve any further consideration. If more suggestions are made, a
survey may be employed.
The First Annual Mid-South Regional Gamma Beta Phi Conference will be held at
Georgia Tech University on March 10th. Details are sketchy right now, but
Casey said he would know more after January 27th. Any members interested
in
attending were asked to sign-up on the paper being circulated at the meeting
or contact Casey at their earliest convenience.
May and August graduates are asked to sign-up with Casey so that a seal may be
placed on their diploma.
For any member interested in purchasing a t-shirt, they are in Lori's office
and are for sale for $10 each.
Casey asked that members please pay close attention to the calendar put
together by the officers to keep up with Gamma Beta Phi activities for this
semester.
VICE PRESIDENT: Vice President Sharaf Alkibisi announced that there would
be
an Education Committee meeting on February 8th at 4:30PM in the Ohio Room of
the Curris Center.
Sharaf encouraged all members who do any tutoring to let the Recording
Secretary know so that they will receive some points.
A tutoring survey was passed out to inquire whether or not members tutor
currently and if not, why. Sharaf suggested that even if members do not
have
the time to tutor, Gamma Beta Phi might work on putting together "tutoring
packets" in various subjects to distribute to local schools.
Sharaf mentioned that Gamma Beta Phi might sponsor an event for International
Students in March.
RECORDING SECRETARY: Recording Secretary Amanda Gerrish reminded all
members
to sign-in on the sheet being circulated. She stated that if anyone had
any
questions about points that her contact information was on the Phlier.
Amanda mentioned that some members have expressed their opinions that they do
not want their point totals listed on the web page for everyone to see.
She
asked for feedback on this issue from all members.
CORRESPONDING SECRETARY: Corresponding Secretary Cheri Riedel
announced that
the Valentine trip to Westview Nursing Home is scheduled for Tuesday, February
13th at 4:30PM. She circulated a sign-up sheet for those interested in
visiting with the residents there. All members wishing to attend should
please meet in the lobby right inside the front doors of the home.
Cheri reminded the members that there are 165 residents of Westview and that
Gamma Beta Phi needs to get started on the homemade valentines. For this
reason, Cheri and Kent will be hosting a valentine making party on Tuesday,
February 6th from 5-7PM in the Curris Center Dance Lounge. For any member
wising to make valentines but cannot attend the valentine making party,
supplies will be in Lori's office for members to use. Valentines made
outside
of the party will need to be turned in by 4PM on the 13th or simply delivered
to the event. Cheri stated that three homemade valentines would be worth
one
point, with a maximum number of points set at three.
In addition to the Westview trip, Gamma Beta Phi has committed to helping run
bingo sessions for the residents of Long Term Care at Murray-Calloway County
Hospital. The first bingo session will be on Saturday, February 24th at
2PM.
A sign-up sheet was circulated for members to attend the bingo days in
February, March and April. Gamma Beta Phi has also committed to help bring
in
some supplies for the bingo prizes. A list of these items appeared on the
back of the calendar.
Cheri announced that she would be holding a Service Committee meeting on
Wednesday, February 7th at 5PM in the Curris Center Dance Lounge to discuss
these and other semester activities.
TREASURER: Treasurer Liz Fatheree announced that Gamma Beta Phi would be
holding another "Rebate Night" in conjunction with Mr. Gatti's.
This event
will be held on Wednesday, January 31st from 5-9PM. She encouraged all
members to attend and bring friends.
Liz announced that Gamma Beta Phi is planning to have a car wash in April.
HISTORIAN: Historian Alison Marr announced that she would be attending the
Mr. Gatti's Rebate Night to take pictures for the scrapbook. She asked
that
members with pictures pertaining to Gamma Beta Phi turn them in to her for the
scrapbook.
PUBLIC RELATIONS: Public Relations Chair Kent Bohanon announced that he
would
be having a Social Committee meeting on Tuesday, January 30th at 5PM in the
Curris Center Dance Lounge to discuss activities for the semester.
Kent announced that Gamma Beta Phi would be making another trip to Opry Mills
mall Saturday, March 3rd.
Kent announced that there would be a movie night sometime in April.
Kent encouraged all members to get points and to post their Gamma Beta Phi
calendars somewhere easily accessible to keep them up to date with our
activities.
