Changing Your Anti-Spam Settings

If you want to make adjustments to your e-mail account, you must be logged into the Murray State Modus Webmail client. Open the Webmail login page. A new window will open and you will not be redirected from this page.

Spam is unsolicited e-mail. It can be a major nuisance to e-mail users because it is sent to a user's e-mail account without the user's request and can cause loss or delay of legitimate e-mail. To view a list of the types of Spam filtered by Modus Webmail, follow this link: Types of Spam.

The Anti-Spam filter can block messages into a section of Webmail called "Quarantine". For instructions on removing the blocked messages, follow this link: Quarantine.

  1. You should see a row of menu options at the top of your screen once you are logged into Webmail.
  2. Click on "Settings" at the top.
  3. Click on the "Email Filtering" link.
  4. Click on the "Anti-Spam" link.

You should see a window that lets you determine where or how spam messages will be stored:

If you select "Delete message immediately", you will never see the message.

If you select "Block message into Quarantine", the spam message will be listed in your Quarantine section of Webmail.

If you select "Tag and let message pass through (SPAM)", the spam message will appear in your Inbox, but will have (SPAM) in the subject line.

Levels of Filtering

There are several categories of SPAM that can be filtered at different levels.

anti spam filter level

  • The "Disabled" level means it will not do any filtering.
  • The Normal level will gather the messages most likely to be SPAM.
  • The Strong level will gather more messages than the Normal level, but it may also filter legitimate messages as well.
  • The Extreme level will gather all messages that have any potential to be Spam, but it will also filter legitimate messages.
  1. To change the filter's level, click the triangle button on the list to drop the menu down.
  2. Select the desired level of the filter by clicking on it.
  3. Once you have set the level you like, click the button marked, "Save". If you do not click the "Save" button, webmail will not retain your settings.

The filter level will be applied to all types of spam selected. Select the types of spam you wish to filter by clicking on the associated checkbox beside the spam type.

Hoax - This type of SPAM usually prompts you to delete important files on your computer(s), download unnecessary programs, or scan for viruses that do not exist. Adult - This type of SPAM directs you toward X-rated websites or material of an adult nature.

Goods - These messages normally attempt to sell high-priced goods to you at low prices. You might also be offered a gift in exchange for your personal information.
Health - This type of SPAM will attempt to convince you to buy prescription medication or join a fitness club. Often, the message is designed to cheat you out of money.
Money - This type of SPAM attempts to convince you to re-mortgage your home or register online for a new credit card. This may also include fake e-mails asking for donations or bank information from you.

Miscellaneous - This SPAM category deals with less common SPAM types that you may encounter that is not stated in the above categories.
