The intent of this page is to inform the user about the operations of Health Services. The table of contents can be found in the column to the left under General Information.

 

Mission Statement:

The mission of Health Services is to maintain, improve and promote optimal wellness of the Murray State University community so that its members may achieve their academic, professional and personal goals.

The staff is committed to enhancing the mission of Murray State University by:

  • - Removing or modifying health-related barriers to academic, professional and social activities.

  • - Educating individuals regarding lifestyle choices and the impact on health and wellness.
  • - Educating individuals to make informed decisions about health-related concerns and how to be informed health-care consumers.
  • - Promoting optimal wellness in all dimensions of the individual's life.

Confidentiality:

Medical records are strictly confidential. No medical information is released without the client's written consent except as required by law. Records will not be faxed, except for unusual circumstances to avoid potential for breaches in confidentiality.

Our office is fully committed to compliance with the HIPAA guidlines by: - Providing appropriate security for our client records.

  1. Protecting the privacy of our client's information. No information is released without the client's written permission, UNLESS required by law.
  2. Providing our clients with proper access to their records.
  3. Appropriately maintaining our client information and billing processes in compliance with national HIPAA standards.

If you ever have any questions or concerns about your services, we encourage you to call and ask for our Compliance Officer.


Referrals:

For those individuals who have long term or chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, depression, allergies (needing allergy injections), etc. they will need to maintain contact with their private health care provider for follow-up care and treatment.

Students: may choose to establish themselves with a local physician while they are at Murray State for the continuing care of long term conditions. Referral to the private health care provider or to a local health care provider of your choice will be made for futher evaluation, assessment, and treatment of Health Services diagnosed conditions that are considered chronic.

Faculty and staff: if they have not already done so, should establish themselves and continue with a local health care provider while they are part of the Murray community for the continuity of care regarding long term conditions. Referral to the local health care provider of your choice will be made for futher evaluation, assessment, and treatment of Health Services diagnosed conditions that are considered chronic.

Most acute health care needs can be met at the Health Services.

Medical Excuses:

Students: Medical excuses are not routinely issued by the Health Service for missed classes or examinations. Exceptions may be for extended illnesses or injuries that necessitate hospitalization or medical withdrawal.

Students are responsible for notifying professors or physical education instructors of absences caused by illness or injury. This should be done early in the morning prior to a class being missed! Students who are seen at Health Services may sign a consent for release of information so that a professor may call to verify date and time of visit to Health Services. Ultimately, it is an academic decision to grant an excused absence.

Medical Excuses for Employers: Excuses for missing work on the Murray State University campus will not be issued to students, faculty or staff. On-campus employers may call to verify date and time an employee was at Health Services if a properly signed consent for release of information form is on the client chart. Exceptions may be for extended illnesses or injuries that necessitate hospitalization.

 


Involvement in Health Care:

Clients are encouraged to discuss their questions and suggestions with members of the Health Service Staff regarding the health care received at the Murray State University Health Services . Participation and involvement are important in helping us meet the health needs of our clients. In an effort to solicit feedback, we conduct an bi-annual survey.


Location:

Health Services is located in the North wing of Wells Hall on the ground floor. Our main entrance faces the quadrangle and is the door closest to Faculty Hall.

Clinic Hours:

Fall & Spring Semesters:
Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 11:15 a.m. AND
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 12:45 - 4:00 p.m.

The clinic staff is available for appointments, emergencies and phone calls on Wednesday afternoons.

Summer Sessions:
Monday - Friday 7:30 - 11:30 a.m.

The clinic staff is available for emergencies and phone calls Monday - Friday afternoons.

Physician Hours:

Monday and Thursday 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. by appointment

Health Line Hours:

Our phone line 270-809-3809 for information and advice is open Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - Noon and 1:00 - 4:30 p.m.

After Hours:

Should a student, faculty or staff member have an emergency during times that the Health Services Clinic or the Health Line are not open he/she may call Public Safety at 270-809-2222. A Public Safety officer will contact a nurse on call who will then get in touch with the person. The client also has the option of going to Murray/Calloway County Hospital Emergency Room (at his/her own expense) that has physician services on a 24-hour basis.

 


Eligibility:

Any student enrolled in Murray State University who has paid tuitiion and mandatory fees is eligible for services. All services with other health care providers or agencies off campus are at the student's own expense.

Full time faculty and staff are eligible for all services. Part-time faculty and staff may use the Health Service for blood pressure screening.

Any Murray State community member may call Health Line for wellness information or for referrals.


What to Expect When Visiting Health Services:

Health Services requests that students, faculty and staff who use our Service complete a Health and Immunization History which will be included on the client chart. Completion of the history form prior to the first Health Services visit will lessen the time in the clinic.

Student Health History    -    Faculty/Staff Health History

Clients are seen on a drop-in basis (see Hours of Operation) for primary health care in an outpatient setting. When a client arrives at Health Services for the first time he/she will be asked to complete the front of the chart that includes basic demographic information.

Clients will be screened and assessed by professional nurses; they may receive treatment by the nurse based on orders from the physician or referred directly to the nurse practitioner or physician, depending on the nature of the visit.

The nurse practitioner is available every day during regular clinic hours. The physician is on campus six hours per week, but is available to the nurses by phone when not on campus. Clients may be referred to the physician's private office if necessary. (NOTE: Referral to an outside health care provider, whether the clinic physician or another provider, is at the client's expense.)

Should a client receive a prescription while at Health Services, he/she may get that prescription filled at a local pharmacy (there is no pharmacy on campus). When a specialist's care is indicated, the nurse will assist with the referral

Services available to the Murray State Student are:

  • - Health Education
  • - Physical assessment for illness or injury
  • - Treatment of illness and minor injury
  • - First aid - Crutches are available on a loan basis
  • - Referrals as needed
  • - Laboratory services - We have an on-campus CLIA-certified lab for moderately complex procedures including complete blood counts, urinalysis, rapid strep screens, urine colony counts, pregnancy tests and sexually transmitted infection testing.
  • - LabCorp is an independent lab service that provides laboratory testing Health Services is not able to do on campus. The laboratory supervisor is able to collect specimens for daily send-out to LabCorp. Clients who have insurance may provide us with a copy of their insurance card and we will submit that with the specimen. LabCorp bills the client directly for testing costs.
  • - Evaluation of health risks

Health Services provides care to students and full-time faculty and staff. The costs associated with Health Services are provided for through student activity fees and employee benefits.

Health Services does not have an immunization program on campus. Anyone who needs immunizations is referred to the Calloway County Health Department for those immunizations that are considered standard by the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention. There is a fee for this service - those with insurance, may wish to see a private health care provider.

Students who wish to receive meningococcal vaccine are encouraged to talk with their primary care physician to discuss the pros and cons of receiving this vaccine. (See Health Clips - meningitis information) Should a student wish to receive the meningococcal vaccine in Murray, they may call the Calloway County Health Department at 270-753-3381 and schedule an appointment to receive immunization. There is a charge for the meningitis vaccine. Other Health Departments in Kentucky and other states may also offer this immunization.


Insurance:

Everyone, particularly students, is strongly encouraged to have a health insurance plan. Students and their families should carefully evaluate their individual plans to determine whether it can be used in the local area (i.e. - is it a PPO or HMO plan that will not cover local physicians and hospital? Would it require that the student return home for care that cannot be provided at Health Services?)

If you do not have health insurance, or if you need additional coverage while a student, you might consider purchasing a basic policy that the university offers through a private agency. Currently, the plan is underwritten by The United Health Care Insurance Company. The rates may vary from year to year.
