MSU Campus Community Computer Maintenance Guide
LESSON EIGHT - Run a Disk Defragmenter (weekly)

In this lesson you will run a disk defragmenter. Running a disk defragmenter will allow your computer to run faster and more efficiently. Fragmentation occurs when you download programs from the internet, install new software, and when you create and delete files and folders. These files are saved on the available space, and if space is not available, portions of these files will be scattered throughout your computer's hard disk. This fragmentation can cause your system to run slower than it should.

Note: The screens were captured in Windows XP; consequently the screens and instructions may slightly differ depending on the version of Windows on your computer.

To Run a Disk Defragmenter, do the following:

1. Go to Start
2. Select All Programs in Windows XP (Programs)
3. Select Accessories
4. Go to System Tools
5. Select Disk Defragmenter

Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, Systems, and then Disk Defragmenter

Note: In Windows 2000, you may need to go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools then to Computer
Management. Select Disk Defragmenter and proceed with the instructions in this lesson.
