Faculty Responsibilities:

* Copyright

Faculty members are familiar with the rules allowing educational Fair Use of copyrighted materials in the traditional classroom. Fair use of copyrighted materials in the digital world is considerably more complex, and copyright permissions are required much more frequently for text, images, and other media. Faculty are individually responsible for seeing that copyright is carefully observed by themselves as well as by any teaching assistants or student helpers involved in course development.

I, as the faculty developer of my online course materials, understand and accept my responsibilities for observing copyright restrictions and insuring that necessary copyright permissions for all the materials included in my online course have been received.

* Exporting Your Course Material and Gradebook

Blackboard provides the capability for instructors to save student records and materials. University regulations for all MSU classes require student work be retained in a secure environment for 12 months (the deadline for appeals) following the end of the course. You should retain records necessary to determine grades.

  1. Export the Gradebook. For instructions on saving the Gradebook to your computer or storage device, visit the Faculty FAQ section of the Help Site.
  2. Export Course Materials. Blackboard provides the means for instructors to export their course to a local hard drive. This copy can serve as a backup in case of human error or technical failure. Faculty should be aware that the Export function does NOT preserve student data. While every effort is made to protect courses on the server, it is ultimately the faculty member who is responsible for insuring appropriate backup of their courses. For instructions on exporting course materials, visit the Faculty FAQ section of the Help Site.

I understand that saving student grades and related materials for 12 months after my course ends is my responsibility. I understand that I need to save this information on my computer or on paper in my office.

Accessibility

The university has a set of guidelines that address federal legislation for accessible web sites for students with disabilities (Americans with Disabilities Act, and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act). We encourage faculty to become familiar with accessible standards as they affect their own teaching. Faculty will be responsible for the accessibility of their course material. CTLT offers classes on developing accessible web pages and has developed a resource site to provide additional information. The guidelines site can be found on RacerNet under Tech Support; workshops are under "Software Training".

Administrator Access

CTLT reserves the right to access your course for troubleshooting purposes.

Student Access

Students will NOT be granted Instructor role access in Blackboard. Additionally, a student taking your class for credit should not be given any course role other than Student.
