AHECs: National, State, & Local

National

The National AHEC Network was created as a strategy to address the shortage of primary care physicians and the distribution of health professionals. Established in 1972, the national AHEC program works to improve the supply, distribution, retention, quality, utilization, and efficiency of health professionals to provide primary care services in medically underserved areas. AHECs serve as partners linking the academic resources associated with university-based health professions training with the clinical training opportunities in the health services delivery system of underserved communities. Nationally, there are 45 AHEC programs located in 43 states that are dedicated to bridging the gaps that exist between primary health care and the population.

State

Kentucky AHECs are a collaborative effort between the University of Louisville Health Sciences Center and the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Eight regional centers serve as links between these academic health education institutions and communities across the Commonwealth.

Funding for AHECs is provided through the
state of Kentucky, and additional funds provided through U.S. Public Health Service, Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) through the University of Louisville Medical School.
