MSU Alumni Association’s “Emerging Scholar Award”
2010

 

Introduction

The MSU Alumni Association’s Emerging Scholar Award is intended to give special recognition for superior research, scholarly or creative work conducted by Murray State University faculty members who are in the early phase of their careers and who show professional promise.   Significant achievements associated with the nominee’s work should have been realized while the nominee has held a faculty position at the University.

Award

The award is in the amount of $1,000, and the recipient’s name will be engraved on the MSU Alumni Association’s Emerging Scholar Award plaque located in the Murray State University Alumni Center.

Eligibility

Faculty holding either a full-time tenure-track or non-tenure appointment and have no more than five years of academic experience is eligible for the Emerging Scholars Award.  Once a faculty member has won the award, he/she will be ineligible for a second award for one year.  A second nomination must be based solely on work completed after an earlier award.

Nominations

Colleagues, collaborators, departments, schools/colleges, or recognized campus organizations may nominate faculty for the award.  Nomination forms are available on-line at:  http://campus.murraystate.edu/administ/sponsoredprograms/emerging_scholar_award.pdf A nomination includes:

Full name of Nominee,
            Nominee’s current position,
            Brief Justification of why the nominee should receive the award, and
            Name and signature of nominator.

 

IMPORTANT DATES

February 15, 2010: Nomination forms are due in the Office of Sponsored Programs, Emerging Scholar Award, Research Policy Committee, 328 Wells Hall.  

March 1, 2010: Deadline for nominees to submit electronic copies of CV to RPC Chair, Dr. David Canning at David.Canning@murraystate.edu 

March 31, 2010: Deadline for top three nominees to submit complete application packages to Office of Sponsored Programs, Emerging Scholar Award, Research Policy Committee, 328 Wells Hall. 

Round #1 – Requested Materials from Nominee

Current Vita - A nominee who wishes to be considered for the award must submit a current vita electronically (MS WORD format preferred) to the Chair of the Research Policy Committee Dr. David Canning.

The vita should include the nominee’s education and employment history, a list of papers presented, awards, research or scholarly manuscripts published (complete citation including author[s], title, journal, year, volume, and pages), research grants and/or other means of support such as fellowships, summer positions related to research, scholarly, or creative work, etc.

Round #2 – Selection of Top Three Candidates and Submission of Complete Packets

The Research Policy Committee will screen the vitas and invite three nominees to submit full applications. 

Individuals asked to submit a full application and materials to the Office of Sponsored Programs.  A complete application packet must include:

Current Vita (as described above).

Examples of Scholarly Work – Include reprints or copies of published materials (journal articles, performance programs, books, musical manuscripts, photos of exhibitions, installations, etc.), as well as items that are in press or are accepted for publication.   It is not necessary to submit copies of all publications; rather, submit a sample of best work.

Summary Statement – The summary statement should contain a brief description, UNDERSTANDABLE TO THE LAY READER, of the completed research, scholarly or creative project(s), highlighting the significance of the work.  The format of this section is flexible, with the main limitation being length - NOT MORE THAN FIVE (5) SINGLE-SPACED PAGES.  Evidence of the significance of the work might include, but is not limited to, the prestige (impact factor or rejection rate) of the journal, publisher, juried show, or performance venue.  Similarly, information related to the impact of the work (e.g., citations, applications, reprint requests, etc.) can also be included in this section.  

Letters of Support - The nominees should have up to THREE (3) letters of support sent to the address below.   The committee encourages the nominees to request at least ONE of the letters from an individual external to Murray State University, when possible.  All of the letters should be from individuals well acquainted with the nominee’s work.  The letters should address the broad impact and significance of the nominee’s work and be understandable to the lay reader.
