 Parliament is formed of two assemblies:  the National Assembly & The Senate

-What is NOW  the  majority in the National Assembly?
The National Assembly comprises 577 deputies divided into the following groups

Members of the National Assembly (deputies) are elected by direct universal suffrage for a five-year term.
Senate members, for a six year term,  by indirect universal suffrage and renewed by half every three years.
In addition to providing a check on the government, the two assemblies draw up and pass legislation. In the case of disagreement on a law the National Assembly makes the final decision. 

The Senate has 331 senators divided into the following groups

-Why does the general election (presidential) take place in two phases, two successive votes?

  • (For your information : In the USA election mode is uninominal for the majority, in one vote.  Establishes a clear majority but favors bipolarization, this deprives minority parties of all representation.  In France large parties prefer the uninominal ballot but smaller parties prefer the proportional representation .)
