INTRODUCTION TO SCIENCE
SPRING 1999

By the end of this section you need to be able to address the following:
  1. What is the function of mitosis? meiosis?  In what parts of the body do each of these processes occur?
  2. How does the outcome of mitosis and meiosis differ?
  3.  If a cell contains 28 chromosomes how many chromosomes will be found in each daughter cell after mitosis?  meiosis?
  4. How many homologous pairs of chromosomes exist in a cell with 36 chromosomes?  What are homologous chromosomes?
  5. How many times do chromosomes of a cell replicate for mitosis?  meiosis?
  6. What is a somatic cell? a germ cell?  Which of these is haploid?  diploid?
  7. What is the significance of random assortment of chromosomes during meiosis?
