Some Murray State Euclidean Math Club (EMC) activities since 1998

The EMC activities given below are ones in which I was a principal organizer or contributor.
(I was a faculty cosponsor of the EMC with Renee Fister from Fall 1998 through Spring 2001
and with Scott Lewis from Fall 2001 through Spring 2007.)


Fall 2009: Helped organize a joint Math Club / MAT 099 "Zome tools" event (October; about 15-20 students attended).

Spring 2009: Helped organize practice talks for the Kentucky MAA (March). Helped organize the annual Calcutta lottery (March).

Fall 2008: Helped host the joint MAT 099 / Math Club Cookout (September 23; about 30 attended, including 16 students, plus faculty, kids, significant others, etc). Helped support the production of the David Roach/Justin Patton/Math Club film "The Zero Matrix" (world premiere October 23; posted on YouTube, click here).

Spring 2008: Helped recruit students for and gave a talk at the annual Kentucky MAA meeting on the campus of Western Kentucky University (March 28-29). Main speaker for the 2007-2008 Math Club / Pi Mu Epsilon banquet (April 28; about 20+ students and faculty attended; title for talk was "How do I love enumeration? Let me count the ways.")

Fall 2007: Helped host the joint MAT 099 / Math Club Cookout (October 2; about 25 students and faculty attended). Invited/hosted the speaker (Dr. Rick Klima of Appalachian State University) for a joint Math Department and Math Club colloquium on voting theory (October 12; about 40+ students and faculty attended).

Problem of the Month: Authored, coauthored, or helped find at least half of the problems used for the roughly 35 Math Club "Problem of the Month" competitions which ran from Spring 2001 through Spring 2007.

Spring 2007: Pi Day and the NCAA Tournament Calcutta Lottery (March 14; 20+ students, 7 faculty, and 2 returning graduates attended; I gave a presentation on a way to determine pi experimentally). NCAA Championship Game Party at Franklin Residential College (April 2; 5 students, 3 faculty, and 1 returning grad attended).

Fall 2006: Student Colloquium by Chris Terry (September 28); Chris Terry and Rhonda Lee-Desautels (October 24); and Jeff Crisp and Jeff Viniard (November 16). Math Club/MAT 099 Cookout (October 3; twenty-seven students and four faculty attended). My wife and I hosted the Halloween party (October 31; about 30 students and faculty attended). Bowling versus the Honors Program (November 29; nine students bowled for the Math Club plus two faculty). Christmas Banquet with speaker Chris Mecklin (a joint event with Pi Mu Epsilon, December 5).

Spring 2006: Student Colloquium by Kendall Lynch, Josh Smith, and Amanda Wallace (February 21); and Mandy Frost and Allison Green (May 4). Pi Day plus the NCAA tournament Calcutta lottery (March 14; about 25 faculty and students attended). NCAA Championship game at Hart College (April 3; three students and two faculty attended).

Fall 2005: Math Club/MAT 099 Cookout (September 27; nearly forty students and faculty attended; this is the last time the event was held at the traditional location behind Winslow Dining Hall). Renee Fister's department colloquium talk co-hosted by the Math Club (October 5). Halloween party hosted by Dubravko Ivansic (October 31; at least nine students and five faculty in attendance). Nathan Hirtz's talk on Perfect Numbers was the inaugural Student Colloquium co-hosted by the Math Club and Pi Mu Epsilon (November 2). Christmas Banquet with guest speaker Genetha Gray (a joint event with Pi Mu Epsilon, December 5).

Spring 2005: Math Club T-shirt contest and sales drive (all spring). NCAA tournament Calcutta lottery (March 14; about 15 students and faculty attended). Travel to the annual Kentucky MAA meeting at Morehead State University (April 1-2). NCAA Championship game at Hart College (April 4).

Fall 2004: Math Club/MAT 099 Cookout (September). I hosted the Halloween party at my house (October). Tutoring at the Murray Learning Academy (Oct, Nov, Dec; I made three visits, twice to tutor). Invited/hosted Math Club and Math Department colloquium guest speaker Rick Klima (November). Student Lindsey Vandiver's Math Club talk (December). Christmas Banquet with guest speaker Scott Lewis (a joint event with Pi Mu Epsilon, December; I organized the ``Ornament Contest'').

Spring 2004: Bowling (February). Practice talks for the Kentucky MAA meeting (March). NCAA tournament Calcutta lottery (March). Math Club poster for the Kentucky MAA meeting (Mar/Apr). NCAA Championship game at Hart College (April).

Fall 2003: Math Club/MAT 099 Cookout (October). Halloween party at the Fairbanks' house (October). Christmas Banquet with guest speaker David Roach (a joint event with Pi Mu Epsilon, December).

Spring 2003: Bowling (February). NCAA tournament Calcutta lottery (March). The "60's" party in honor of the 60th birthdays of Wayne Bell, Don Bennett, and John Goodell (March). Invited/hosted Math Club and Math Department colloquium speaker Kennan Shelton (March). NCAA Championship game at Hart College (April).

Fall 2002: Christmas banquet (December 3). Invited/hosted Math Department and Math Club colloquium speaker Rick Klima (November 1). Halloween party (October 31; over 30 in attendance). Math Club / MAT 099 Cookout (October 1; near 40 in attendance).

Spring 2002: Kentucky MAA (April 5-6; travelled with 10 students and 5 other faculy). NCAA Championship game party at Hart College (April 1; about 10 students, 5 faculty). Bowling vs Honors Program (March 28; Math Club had an 8-member team). Calcutta lottery/pizza party (March 12; 7 students, 9 faculty). Bowling (February 19; 8 students, 4 faculty).

Fall 2001: Faculty vs.\ Student Double Dare (September). Progressive dinner (Stephanie Warford, Keith Weber, and Scott Lewis were hosts) (October). Halloween party at Andrew Siefker's home (October). Pizza party (November). Christmas banquet with Chris Mecklin as invited speaker (December).

Spring 2001: Atari Party (January). Bowling vs. Geoscience (February). Careers in Math talk by Renee Fister (February). Movie night at Scott Lewis' home (March). Kentucky MAA (April). NCAA Championship party (April).

Spring and Fall 2000: Kentucky MAA meeting; NCAA Championship party; 80's party; Halloween party; Christmas banquet.

Spring and Fall 1999: Display-case competition (February?). 70's party (March?). Volleyball extravaganza (March?). Kentucky MAA conference (April?). Homecoming banner-making event (September?). Homecoming parade (September?). Halloween party (October). Christmas banquet (December).

Fall 1998: Making T-shirts and an award-winning banner for homecoming; Homecoming parade; Fall volleyball bash; Halloween party; Hosting a talk by Andrew Siefker (a joint meeting with Pi Mu Epsilon); Bowling night; The Christmas Party (joint with Pi Mu Epsilon). Co-wrote, produced, and starred in the original Math Club movie, To Infinity and Beyond: A Club Boy Odyssey. Mike Prophet was co-writer and director.
