Extra Credit: Article Review Option
The maximum extra credit points that can be earned in PSY 180 this semester is
18. You are only eligible to receive extra credit points if you have completed
the Research Exposure requirement, turned in all four of the Application Assignments,
and have no more than 4 unexcused absences. As soon as your Research Exposure
requirement is completed, any article reviews will be counted toward Extra Credit.
One way to earn extra credit points is via the Article Review Extra Credit Option.
Here's
how it works:
- Read and review scientific articles reporting psychological research.
Articles acceptable for extra credit are to be published in psychology journals
(not websites and not magazines; e.g., Psychology Today is a magazine,
not a journal, so it’s not eligible). Your articles are not to all
come from the same journal nor from the same volume of a given journal.
For each
article that you read you are to write a two page report.
- Each report is to be in your own words (reports not in your own words
will be considered plagiarized and will not be counted for extra credit).
Each report is to follow the format for research reports outline under
Alternative
2 in the Research Exposure handout. See that handout for specific details.
- A brief summary is as follows: discuss the following (in your own
words) and include headings for each section:
- Research Question: a description
of the purpose/research question under investigation,
- Background: a
brief discussion of some of the background studies presented in
the article’s
introduction,
- Method: a clear description of the methodology
used,
- Results: the
results that were found;
- Conclusions: the
conclusions that the author(s) drew about the findings, and,
finally,
- Concept
and Evaluation: a paragraph or two identifying the
course concept(s) to which the article relates and your
own reactions
and evaluation
of the research reported in the article.
- Each report is to be two to
three pages long, typed in 11 or 12 pt. font, double-spaced, with 1” margins
all around. For each report, you must also turn in a photocopy of the
complete article.
- You will earn 2 extra credit points for each report (up to the maximum
of 18 points).
- For students who are unable or choose not to take part in the Article
Review Option for extra credit, a Research Participation
Option and a Written Option (also worth a maximum of 18 points)
are available. In addition, there may be opportunities during the semester
to attend
certain
University
functions or participate in other outside activities for extra credit.
Your professor will inform you in class which activities are available
for extra
credit and how extra credit may be earned for those activities. Information
on those Other Extra Credit Activities will
also be posted on this web site.
- The Research Participation Extra Credit, Article Review Extra Credit,
Written Extra Credit, and Other Extra Credit Activities options may be
combined to help you earn up to 18 total extra credit points.
