I. TITLE: German 421.
The German Novelle
II. CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION: Historical interpretation of representative literary works of the German Novelle from Classicism to the early 20th Century.
III. PURPOSE: The purpose of the course is to familiarize the students with representative authors and works of the German Novelle, as well as the history and theory behind the Novelle.
IV. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1) teaching students basic approaches to reading literary texts in German
including the vocabulary used in literary interpretation;
2) familiarizing students with the major historical events which helped
shape the cultural and literary periods during which the Novellen were
written;
3) reading and presenting--individually and collaboratively--interpretations
of representative Novellen from the periods Classicism, Romanticism, Biedermeier,
Poetic Realism, Naturalism, and Expressionism;
4) developing the students linguistic ability especially in the area of
reading, writing and speaking.
V. CONTENT OUTLINE: Students will study representative works of the Novelle from the following periods: Classicism, Romanticism, Biedermeier, Poetic Realism, Naturalism, and Expressionism.
VI. INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES:
Instructional activities will include lectures, multimedia, discussions,
oral and written reports, worksheets, and video films.

There will be no makeups of quizzes. There will also be no make-ups of exams except in most extreme cases and only at the instructor’s discretion; if consent is given, the make-up must be arranged in advance of the regularly scheduled exam.
X. ATTENDANCE POLICY:
You are expected to attend all classes. Absences WILL affect your grade.
Because of the emphasis on class participation and discussion, your attendance
is crucial. Two absences will be permitted FOR ILLNESS AND FAMILY EMERGENCIES
ONLY. Your grade will be lowered thereafter. Should you have to miss a
class for illness or an emergency, it is recommended that you inform me
BEFORE class so that I do not have an unpleasant surprise in class. Missing
one-fourth of the class meetings for any reason (excused or unexcused)
will result in a failing grade.
--AN ABSENCE IS NOT AN EXCUSE FOR BEING UNPREPARED! If you must be absent,
it is your responsibility to find out the assignment and to come to the
next class prepared.
