I. TITLE: Advanced Grammar

II. TEXT AND REFERENCES:

       A Practice Grammar of German. Dreyer and Schmitt (Verlag für Deutsch) 1994.

       A good German-English dictionary

III. CATALOG DESCRIPTION:

       A specialized study contrasting German and English grammatical structures and usage.

IV. & V. PURPOSE and COURSE OBJECTIVES:

VI. CONTENT OUTLINE:

       The course is centered around the textbook, but extra materials may be distributed at the discretion of the instructor. Grammatical explanations and exercises from the text will be assigned as homework. The student will be expected to be able to duscuss the material and  to practice the assigned exercises in class on the day they are due. Exercises will be both written and oral. The student will also keep a notebook of vocabulary.

VII. INSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES:

       Students are explected to read assigned sections of the text and to prepare homework assignments before class. Written homework is to be done before class and in the most complete form possible (i.e., in complete sentences. ***Late assignments cannot be accepted except by prior arrangement. No credit will be given for assignments turned in late. Pop quizzes may be given unannounced throughout the semester.

IX. RESOURCES:

      You are expected to make full use of the textbook, dictionaries, and other grammar and vocabulary books you may have, as well as computer resources. However, your work must be your own work and not the work of a native speaker or near native speaker. If you experience difficulties, please come to the instructor and let me help you.

X. GRADING PROCEDURES:

      400 pts./40% 2 Exams (200 pts. each)

      200pts./20% Homework, written assignments, and oral work

      100 pts./10% Quizzes

      300 pts./30% Final.

      Participation on the student’s part is assumed to be an integral component of a language course and consists of completing homework assignments on time and preparedness and willingness to take part in class activities.

      There will be no makeups of quizzes or exams unless in extreme cases and then only at the instructor’s discretion; if consent is given, the make-up must be arranged in advance of the regularly scheduled exam.

XI. ATTENDANCE POLICY:

     You are expected to attend all class meeting. Since daily written and oral work is of the utmost importance in learning this material, attendance is crucial. A valid written excuse is necessary to excuse an absence. Unexcused absences will affect your grade. Furthermore, if you miss one fourth of the class meetings for any reason (excused or unexcused), you will not pass this course.

     If you must be late or absent, it is your responsibility to find out and do the homework assignment before the next class period and to come to my office to get any handouts.

     Note: I urge you to meet and confer with me often to determine just how you are doing. I am here to help you as much as I can.

XII. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY POLICY:

     1. It is the responsibility of every student to be informed about the collegiate Academic Integrity Policy. Cheating in whatever form constitutes academic dishonesty.

     2. Copies of the policy are available in: IDC workbooks, Classroom bulletin boards, Department of Foreign Language Office, Dean of Humanistic Studies Office

     3. Your signature on every assignment, quiz, and exam represents a pledge that you have adhered to this policy.

     4. I expect students to abide by the highest ethical standards.
