V. Catalog Description: A thematic approach to the history of the U.S. since 1865, designed as a University Studies social science elective. Students will examine three themes: the forces that transformed America from a predominantly rural, agricultural society to a predominantly urban, industrial one; the rising political consciousness of various American groups and the expanding regulatory role of the federal government; and the emergence of America as a world power.

VII: Course Objectives: The course will consider the major themes of American history since 1865 with emphasis on the political, social, economic and cultural forces which shaped the nation after the Civil War. The course will use primary source documents as a method of analyzing the role of personalities and institutions in the development of the nation.
VIII: Course Requirements: Students must complete all assignments to pass the course. Each student must send the instructor via e-mail a five-digit ID number no later than July 2, 2001. This personal ID number will be used to post grades.
IX: Grading Procedures: The total points a student may earn in this course is 390 divided as follows:
STUDY QUESTIONS: There will be a study question for each chapter (total of 19). Each question is worth 10 points for a total of 190 points.
EXAMS: There will be two essay exams worth 100 points each. Exam # 1 will be posted to the website by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 13, 2001. The answer is due no later than 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 17, 2001. Exam #2 will be posted to the website by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 31, 2001. The answer is due not later than 4:30 p.m., Friday, August 3, 2001.
Grading Scale: A 351 - 390; B 312 - 350; C 273 - 311; D 234 - 272 ; E below 234
