V. Catalog Description: A thematic approach to the history of the U.S. to 1865, designed as a University Studies social science elective. Three basic themes will be included: the transplantation of European and African cultures to America and their interaction with the cultures of native American Indians; the emergence of distinctive American values and institutions and the establishment of the American nation; and the stresses that culminated in the Civil War.

Guide: America: A Narrative History, 5th edition, vol. 1.
VII: Course Objectives: The course will consider the
major themes of American history to 1865 with emphasis on the political,
social, economic and cultural forces which shaped the nation. The
course will use primary source documents as a method of analyzing the role
of personalities and institutions in the development of the nation.
VIII: Course Requirements: Students must complete all assignments to pass the course. Each student must send the instructor via e-mail an five-digit ID number no later than May 29, 2001. This personal ID number will be used to post grades.
IX: Grading Procedures: The total points a student may earn in this course is 380 divided as follows:
STUDY QUESTIONS: There will be a study question for each chapter (total of 18). Each question is worth 10 points for a total of 180 points.
EXAMS: There will be two essay exams worth 100 points each. Exam #1 will be posted to the website by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, June 11, 2001 . The answer is due no later than 4:30 p.m., Thursday, June 14, 2001. Exam #2 will be posted to the website by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 27, 2001 . The answer is due no later than 4:30 p.m., Friday, June 29, 2001.
GRADING SCALE: A 342 - 380; B 304 - 341; C 266 - 303; D 228 - 265: E below 228
