“The Civil War changed the United States more deeply than any other event in the nineteenth century.  The conflict brought the deaths of over 625,000 soldiers and the shattering of families North and South.  It saw bitter rioting in the streets and the first assassination of a president.  It saw fortunes made and lost.  It brought a major shift in the balance of power among the regions and an expansion of the federal government.  Most important, the war brought what few Americans, regardless of their region or their color, could have imagined at the end of 1860: the immediate emancipation of 4 million enslaved people.”
