National Outdoor Recreation &
Rural Tourism Consortium

September 6 - September 12, 2009

Each fall during the week of Labor Day, students and faculty gather in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for the National Outdoor Recreation & Rural Toursim Consortium. Participating Universities include: Eastern Illinois University, Linsey Wilson College, Middle Tennessee State Unverstity, Murray State University, and Virginia Commonwealth University.

The 2009 consortium occurs during the 75th anniversary of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which will be a very special time to be in the park. This experiential, hands-on learning environment affords an opportunity to learn with and from a diverse mix of students and faculty, as well as professionals from the National Park Service, GSMIT, and many other leaders in the field of outdoor recreation, tourism, and resource management. In addition to the opportunity to "connect with nature" during one of the most beautiful times in the park, students will learn about rural tourism strategies, trends, and practicies in the gateway communities of Townsend, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg.
