Writing and Designing for the Web Workshop
November 5, 2002 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

For each of the following tasks, we will discuss practical principles you can use. Then we will give you the opportunity for hands-on practice using popular software.

Workshop Agenda
Choosing Your Look Every web site projects an image – daring, traditional, innovative, fun – you can establish the look you desire by making specific design choices. Let your audience be your guide.
Reviewing Web Sites—Good and Bad Together, we’ll take a look at some sample web sites and discuss what is effective about them and what isn’t. You can then apply these ideas to designing a site that works.
Planning Your Web Site A critical component of effective web design is planning. Because web sites are, indeed, a web of screens, they must be carefully planned to entice your audience and be easy to use.
Designing Your Pages Now, you can translate your look and your plans into a page design that works.
Writing for the Web Basic rules of technical/business writing apply here but with a few changes for the web. We will discuss the basics as you write the text for a web page.
Using Images and Graphics As with writing, some of the basic rules for using images and graphics apply to web design too but with some important considerations. We’ll discuss them—particularly the use of logos and clip art.
