Artist's Statement
My work is made primarily on the potter's wheel and then altered while the clay is wet. This is done in such a way that
the form and surface of the vessel references the human body. I also slip cast consumer product containers and
incorporate these into the work. I use satin matt glazes to enhance the form and create a surface similar to skin, while
the colors of these glazes are based on commercial design.
I am interested in taking objects that are familiar, and in some cases taken for granted, and putting them in a context that
has the viewer look at them in a different way. Taking a mundane object such as the foot of a 2-liter bottle of Coke, and
giving it an elegant, refined form that references the human body gives the previously mundane a since of beauty,
intimacy, and sincerity that was not there before. For me this raises many questions about how this culture views itself,
and how our notions of beauty relate to our materialistic, consumer nature.
