Statement
Growing up as a young girl with two older brothers I always felt as though I was just one of the guys. it wasn’t until I got older that I began o realize that there are certain expectations of women in our society. We are, for the most part, expected to look, dress and act in a certain way. Although I have never felt limited by these societal expectations, they have weighed heavily on my mind as I have gotten older.
This body of work is intended to explore, through costuming, the men that
women think they would have been if they had been born a male, and the women
they think they would be if they manipulated themselves to fit their idea
of what others want. The end result is a triptych that shows the actual woman
in her environment with her fictional man and woman flanking her on both
sides,
This body of work is the first in what will be a four part series. In this
body I chose to investigate the ideal males and females of women in their
twenties. I will juxtapose these with the next three bodies of work that
will include middle-aged women, elderly women and adolescent girls.
This body of work hopefully shows a cohesive view into different women’s
psyche and their idea of what it means to be a woman.
