My work consists of Lithography and Relief in the field of Printmaking. The majority of the prints that I make are representational. Formally in my prints I use line quality and value to define the main figure and the space in which it dwells in the composition. Compositionally, I position the main figure or focal point of the piece in a way that shows vulnerability or strain. I also use repetition in my compositions to overwhelm the viewer or give psychological weight to the piece as a whole.
My prints are about the possible difficulties, both mentally and physically, present when dealing with issues of everyday life. How we handle the issues of everyday life exploits our strengths and weaknesses in dealing with them. In my prints, I focus on the weaknesses rather than the strengths because I feel that it provokes a stronger reaction and criticism from the viewer. Although much of my work primarily focuses on the mental weaknesses, I strongly believe that mental weaknesses are very closely related, if not parallel to, physical weaknesses, and so my work often contains and comments on the relationships between the two.
One of my main influences is Ralph Steadman. Steadman is an illustrator whose work isn’t reflected in my art directly, but is more of an inspiration. One of the aspects of his art that really intrigues me is the chaotic and hellish reality depicted in his works. These realities help me to better portray my own concept of weaknesses. Formally, the linear quality and flowing color in his work is what first drew me in to his worlds. His use of color influenced me in how I use repetition and patterning to represent moods of the scene rather than pictorial space.
