Exercise 3:

Microsoft Word & Resume Writing

     This Exercise should be done in conjunction with viewing the Microsoft Word 97 Video Tape available in the Agriculture Office for checkout (1 hour tape).

     This Exercise will serve as a foundational beginning to the course allowing the student to advance their skills at resume writing as they prepare to enter the world of work or continue to pursue new employment opportunities.  The main premise of this exercise will be to prepare agriculture students to develop a resume/vita which will allow them to optimally market themselves and their skills in today's workplace.

     In this unit a student should begin by assessing their strengths and weaknesses and to begin formatting a way in which they can be clearly, concisely, and professionally conveyed to prospective employers within the industry.  The resume component may follow a variety of formats.  These formats are available through various guides, books and examples and may be obtained through local bookstores and employment agencies.

     The student is encourage to use a customized format that is consistent with their discipline.  However, each student is allowed the freedom to add any sections in which they feel are relevant to their situation.

The three sections of the Unit are as follows:

Cover Letter :

     In constructing the cover letter a student should feel free to develop their own style, however each should involve the use of correct grammar and headings..

Resume :

     The resume may be constructed using a variety of styles.  However, the following sections must be included:

    Career Objective
    Education
    Professional and/or Work Experience
    Leadership or Organizational Involvement
    Community/Civic Activities
    A student may also elect to use additional headings

Reference Page:

     The reference page should be placed behind the resume and on a separate page.  It should include your name, address, phone number and the names, addresses, and phone numbers of 3-5 references.  Please also include titles held by the individuals.

Exercise Requirements:

Complete all work in Microsoft Word document format with the resume and cover letter being on one file (label as marked below).

The cover letter should be on the first page, and then the resume to follow similar to an employer recieving it and scrolling down to view it.

Keep a copy for your records and later use

References:

You may elect to use any resume book that you wish.  However, there are some available in the MSU bookstore or you may use the one many of you had for AGR 339.
