PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Full Professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communications at Murray State University, Murray, Kentucky (August 1984 to present). Instructional emphases: broadcast news writing, reporting, and production; research methods in mass communication; communications theory; media literacy; use of the World Wide Web in mass communications.  Past adviser to student-produced public affairs and news TV programming telecast on local cable facility.

Evening News Producer for WLUK-TV, Channel 11, Green Bay, Wisconsin (July 1982 - July 1984). In charge of 6 p.m. newscasts, including editorial decisions and supervision of reporters, photographers, and tape editors. Responsible for show's content, timing, and scripts. Also a producer of two half-hour documentaries.

College Instructor at St. Norbert College, Green Bay (Spring 1984). Taught media writing in the Communications Department as adjunct.

News Producer for WDTN-TV, Channel 2, Dayton, Ohio. Produced 11 p.m. weeknight newscasts, as well as related shows (1981 - 1982).

Congressional Press Secretary for Rep. Allen Ertel (D-17-PA) (1980 - 1981). Responsible for all Washington, D.C. office press functions, including the arrangement of news conferences; the handling of media relations via telephone, mail, and in person; the production of weekly radio programs and newspaper columns "from the congressman"; and the determination and execution of videotaped reports for Central Pennsylvania television stations. Handled much press in the wake of Three Mile Island, which is within the 17th District.

Evening News Producer for WNCT-TV, Greenville, North Carolina (1979 - 1980). Duties included supervision and production of 6 and 11 p.m. weekday news programs, as well as weekend reporting. Served in management capacity in lieu of the news director.

General Assignment and Beat Reporter for KOMU-TV, Columbia, Missouri (1978 - 1979). Worked education, science, and health beats. Also shot, edited and assembled reports for broadcast using both 16 mm. film and 3/4" videotape. Produced newscasts for KOMU, part-time.

News Reporter and Master Control Operator for KBIA-FM, the National Public Radio affiliate in Columbia, Missouri (1978 - 1979). Did street reporting, studio production, and worked solo shifts in classical and jazz music programs. Possess Third-Class FCC operator's license.

News Reporter and News Editor for Meridian , the student newspaper of Herbert Lehman College, New York City, as an undergraduate. Meridian print run exceeded 10,000 per week.

Awarded $1,400 through the Freedom Forum 1999 Professor's Publishing Program, for research and production of media reports concerning the political dimensions of earthquake forecasting in the New Madrid Seismic Zone of the central U.S.  One outcropping: Sleeping Giant: The Next Great New Madrid Earthquake, a five-part radio series broadcast in Western Kentucky in Oct., 1999.

Recipient of Regents Award for Teaching Excellence in College of Fine Arts and Communication, May 1992 ($1,000 award for one faculty member among 59 in the college); was the departmental nominee for this recognition for three successive years.

For doctoral work in Carbondale, Ill., Summer 1988: $2,500 awarded by the M.S.U. Faculty Professional Development Committee.
