Slimy Salamander


4.5"-8", usually shiny black with large white, gray, or yellow spots on sides and scattered silvery white spots or brassy flecks on head, back, and tail.  Slage gray belly.  Found in ravine slopes, wooded floodplains, etc.  Completely terrestrial salamander with direct development.  Nocturnal, and active all year round in the South; this far north found under logs and flat rocks when warm, and especially after or during rainfall.  Skin glands secrete gluey substance.
