Eastern Spadefoot Toad

1.5-3.5 long.  Stout, with sickle-shaped spade on each hind foot.  Skin relatively smooth, with scattered tiny tubercles.  Olive to brown coloration, often with two irregular light lines down back.  Underside white to grayish.  Voice sounds like a coarse, low-pitched complaint of a crow, at 2 second intervals.  We have the Eastern Spadefoot.  This species is found in forested, brushy, or cultivated areas with sandy or gravelly soil.  Breeds explosively sometime from March to September, depending on when rains fill temporary pools.
