American Toad

 

 
2"-4.5" long.  Brown to brick-red to olive, with various patterns of lighter colors.  Spots brownish, warts brown to orange-red.  May have a light stripe down the middle of back, and male may have a dark throat.  On head, elongate parotoid glands don't touch the prominent  cranial crests.  Three or fewer warts per dorsal spot.  Voice is a pleasant musical trill lasting up to 30 seconds.  Found throughout eastern North America, this species is common in a variety of habitats from mowed backyards to heavily forested mountains, anywhere there is aundant moisture and insects.  Primarily nocturnal.  Breeds from March to July, Depending on rainfall, and is an explosive breeder in some areas.  Lays strings of eggs.
