| 15"-31" long, small with slender tail tipped with a tiny ratle.
Gray with brown to black blotches along midline of back. Top of head
has nine enlarged scales. Found throughout the southeast in a variety
of forested, prairie, or marshy habitats. Tiny rattle makes a buzzing
sound that can only beheard for a few feet. Very cryptic against
the forest floor, and often remains still while people pass by. Some
are aggressive, striking with little warning, while others are not.
Eat mice, lizards, small snakes, and insects. |
